Marks Named President Emeritus

Marks was honored at two events during the past week, a dinner attended by almost 500 including Texas State University System presidents and regents, state and national legislators, and a Thursday afternoon reception attended by students, faculty and administrators.

At the Monday event Nancy Neal, who chairs the board of regents, announced the board's decision to award Marks the president emeritus title.

Neal also announced that the university's administration building, in which Marks began his teaching career and in which he officed when he retired as president, has been re-named the Bobby K. Marks Administration Building.

Marks, who served more than six years as SHSU's 11th president, was also honored by resolutions passed by the Texas Senate, presented to him by State Senator Steve Ogden, and by the Texas House of Representatives, presented by Representative Dan Ellis.

Huntsville Mayor Bill Green announced that the Huntsville City Council had passed an ordinance re-naming Ave. H between 15th Street and Ave. I, on the eastern edge of the SHSU main campus, as Bobby K. Marks Drive.

The intersection at the southeast corner of the university coliseum thus becomes Bobby K. Marks Drive and Elliott T. Bowers Boulevard. Bowers, who retired as SHSU's ninth president in 1989, was also awarded the title of president emeritus.

The SHSU board of regents also moved the effective date of the beginning of President James F. Gaertner's administration to Aug. 21 to coincide with the beginning of the fall semester.

Alumni Holding Patio Party

The event is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. at the Office of Alumni Relations in Academic Building 2 at the corner of Sam Houston Ave. and 17th St.

"The Alumni Association would like to take this opportunity to welcome Dr. Gaertner back, to give everyone a chance to meet him, and to encourage Sam alums and others as well to support our organization," said Kevin Hayes, director of alumni relations.

Hayes requests that anyone planning to attend the event notify him by e-mail (hayes@shsu.edu) or return forms distributed throughout campus to SHSU Box 2022 by Sept. 5 so that an adequate supply of snacks, adult beverages and soft drinks can be provided.

The event will also feature door prizes, music, and the opportunity for new members to sign up for a one-time fee of $25.

Stop Smoking Program Offered

"The program consists of four weekly meetings offering education, motivation, and support for those desiring to kick the habit," said Lott.

Tobacco use cessation medications are also available at the participants' expense.

"Studies indicate that about 60 per cent of those who participate in a program like this and who use the available medication are successful," said Lott, "but it all depends on a person's motivation and willingness to stick with it."

Intensive Study Skills Program

Information is offered on avoiding procrastination, time management, reading textbooks and taking notes, test-taking strategies and stress management.

The center's Intensive Study Skills program consists of groups of 8-10 students who meet weekly for six 60-minute sessions. Four group times are available to fit almost any schedule.

Groups begin meeting the week of Sept. 10 on the following schedule: Monday, 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.; Wednesday, 11 a.m. - noon; and Thursday 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

The center's Study Skills Walk In program consists of "stand alone" sessions for students with specific study skills concerns, and no appointment is necessary.

That program offers sessions on Mondays from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.; Tuesdays 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.; Wednesdays 3 - 4 p.m.; and Thursdays, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

Introduction to Computers, Oct. 15-Dec. 10; Microsoft Word-Core Level, Oct. 9-Nov. 29; Beginning Keyboarding, Oct. 10-Jan. 23; Spanish Level I, Oct. 9-Dec. 18; and Ballroom Dancing, Oct. 3-Nov. 28.

Also, Basic Genealogy, Oct. 11-Nov. 15; Silk Flower Arranging, Oct. 11-Nov. 8; Learn to Play Bridge, Oct. 11-Dec. 20; Cake Decorating and Cooking, Oct. 4-23; Oil Painting, Oct. 5-Nov. 30; Beginning Yoga, Oct. 8-Nov. 12; Fearless European Travel, Oct. 8-Nov. 12.

New courses include A+ Certification, Network+ Certification, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Certified Internet Webmaster Training in partnership with Quick Strike Training and Certification, and AutoCAD courses in partnership with Unicad, Inc.

Digital Art on Exhibit

The exhibition features works of art created and produced digitally using the computer software programs Corel Painter, Adobe PhotoShop, and Microsoft Picture. The art gallery is open from noon - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Lesesne Elected to National Committee

Lesesne also chairs the council's Assembly on Literature for Adolescents, is a past president of the Texas Council of Teachers and a member of the board of directors for the council's Junior High/Middle School Assembly.

Lesesne previously taught English at the middle school level for 15 years.

Farewell Reception

Martinez, who has worked in the SHSU library for 27 years, said she plans to continue teaching cake decorating in the Continuing Education program, to make clothes for her grandchildren, and to take a three-month trip to Ireland, where she was born.
