SHSU Update for Week of Sept. 2
'Friends of Music' CampaignThe Sam Houston State University School of Music and its music ensembles are known throughout Texas largely because of the support of their "Friends."This is according to Rodney M. Cannon, interim chair of the school, who announced the 14th Annual Friends of Music fund drive. A "thank you" Friends of Music Gala is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Recital Hall, with a following reception in Austin Hall. "Friends of Music dollars were used to help support our music scholarships and provided financial support for the performance activity and travel expenses by our music ensembles," said Cannon. These performances included the Wind Ensemble and the SHSU Orchestra at the Texas Music Educators Association convention the past two years and the planned performance of the SHSU Jazz Ensemble at the College Band Directors National Association convention in Houston in February 2002. "Our SHSU Chorale was able to conduct a four-day tour with Friends of Music support this past year," said Cannon, "and the SHSU Opera Players continue to be active in performing in a variety of educational and civic settings." Friends of Music memberships range from Passholder ($25) to Patron ($500 and above). Wellness Offers Varied ProgramsThe Recreational Sports Wellness Program has several programs to get SHSU faculty, staff and students on the way to wellness.Free weight room orientation classes are scheduled at 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 4) as well as Oct. 2 and Nov. 6, in the weight room of the Health/Kinesiology Center. Free 40-minute instructor-led power walking sessions are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:10 p.m. and Mondays through Thursdays at 5:20 p.m. The walks begin at the main entrance of the Kinesiology Center, or on its second floor track in bad weather. Free group fitness classes in a variety of activities including toning, step aerobics, kickboxing and others are offered throughout the week. Personal fitness training is offered in three package levels at fees ranging from $7.50 to $10 per session. Special events include a free AeroJam from 7:30 - 9 p.m. Oct. 16 in Johnson Coliseum and a free Finals Relief party with movies, munchies and massages from 7-11 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Bearkat Lounge in Johnson Coliseum. An Aerobics and Fitness Association of America course for kickboxing instructors is offered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Kinesiology Center aerobics room, with a fee of $119. Discounts are offered for Fitness Association members and recreational sports instructors. Call 1.800.446.2322 to register. Research Exhibition is WednesdayThe 2nd Annual Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Accomplishments is scheduled for Wednesday (Sept. 5) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bates Room of the Beto Criminal Justice Center.More than 50 undergraduate students from across the university who have been involved in research projects and creative activities during the past year will display the results of their efforts as posters, videos, examples of artwork, etc. Faculty, students and staff are invited to stop by and see the exhibits.
Faculty/Staff Meeting ScheduledJames F. Gaertner, Sam Houston State University president, has announced that a faculty/staff meeting has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Criminal Justice Center auditorium.Faculty and staff members with 25 years of service will be recognized, as will recipients of the Staff Excellence Awards. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
Meningitis Vaccine RecommendedThe Sam Houston State University Student Health Center and Huntsville Pediatrics and Internal Medicine are cooperating in a program to lower the cost of meningitis vaccine.The Meningitis Foundation of America recommends that college students, particularly freshmen who live in dormitories, receive this vaccine. Vaccination is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays at Huntsville Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, Suite 10 (next to Huntsville Memorial Hospital). Bals Work on ExhibitWork by Jill Bals, an artist from Midland, will be on display Sept. 3 - Sept. 28 in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.There will be a closing reception from 5 - 7 p.m. Sept. 27, with Bals available to meet visitors and to discuss her work.
'Better Grades in Less Time'Award-winning speaker Gary Cohen will help students learn how to quicken reading speed, increase comprehension, and enhance their memory, at a presentation at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 4) in Johnson Coliseum.The event is sponsored by the Sam Houston State University Department of Student Activities. Christian Group Meets WeeklyThe Christian Faculty and Staff Association has announced weekly meetings at noon on Fridays at Canterbury House, 1614 University Avenue.The group is an interdenominational, independent Christian fellowship, according to Betsy Torrez, associate professor of geology.
