'Follies' and 'Gala' Begin Fine Arts Year

Both are set for Saturday (Sept. 15) evening, but have schedules which allow fine arts patrons to participate in both if they wish.

The theatre and dance event, "A Grand Night for Follies," and the music event, the "Annual Faculty Gala," provide scholarships and funds for such activities as the appearance of music groups off campus.

"A Grand Night for Follies" begins at 5:30 p.m. at the University Theatre Center, with a silent auction in the Mainstage Theatre and a vaudeville variety show at 6 and 9 p.m. The show includes original Burns and Allen sketches and will showcase several Huntsville notables onstage.

Auction items include original artwork, jewelry, golf packages, baseball tickets, theatre tickets, time-share condo use and restaurant gift certificates. A variety of snacks prepared by Huntsville's best restaurants will be served in the auction area.

Tickets for the "Follies" are $50 per person, with proceeds going directly into the theatre and dance scholarship fund. Tickets are available by calling 936.294.1329. They should be reserved, if possible, but will be available at the event.

The School of Music Faculty Gala is held each year in conjunction of the school's Friends of Music Fund Drive, which is under way. The Faculty Gala is the first of the "thank you" events planned for the year, and is free to Friends.

The performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall, with a reception to follow in Austin Hall.

Faculty performers will include Mary Kay Lake, Wayne Barrett, Sohyoung Park, Andrew Wilson, Henry Howey, Jay Whatley, Patricia Pierce Card, Robert Daniel, and Clive Swansbourne.

Friends of Music memberships range from Passholder ($25) to Patron ($500 and above). All include free admission to School of Music recitals and concerts and higher levels include additional benefits as well.

KSHU-FM to Air 'Worldwide Jazz'

The Sam Houston State University radio station, KSHU-FM, will begin broadcasting Worldwide Jazz, a weekly one-hour series featuring mainstream jazz artists performing at overseas concert venues, at 5 p.m. Sept. 17.

"Worldwide Jazz will provide jazz lovers in Huntsville and surrounding communities the rare opportunity to hear live jazz performances from around the globe," said Paul J. MacArthur, manager of "The Kat" 90.5.

MacArthur said that the first episode will feature recordings of live appearances by the Michel Camilo trio and Tony Martinez. Subsequent programs will highlight Jimmy Haslip, the Walt Weiskopf Quartet, Dr. Lonnie Smith, the New Cool Collective Big Band, and many European jazz artists.

Host and producer for the series is Gene Parrish, a veteran of more than 25 years in public broadcasting. Many of the performers were recorded in Nick Vollebregt's Jazzcafe in Laren, Holland.

Recordings were also made in several other countries, including Australia, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

KSHU-FM broadcasts classical music every Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to noon and jazz from noon to 6 p.m.

Looking for a New Racquet?

The club meets from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Health/Kinesiology Center racquetball courts. Membership is open to beginners as well as experienced players.

Besides conducting a sanctioned tournament, the members participate in events throughout the state. Last year the club also traveled to Aeros hockey and Astros baseball games as a group.

"Racquetball can provide a lifetime sport and great entertainment," said Smith. "We invite anyone interested to come join a new family of thrill-seeking racqueteers."

Bob Case, the club's faculty adviser, said that the club is hoping to improve upon last year's travel schedule with a World Series outing "when the Astros eliminate those stupid Cubs, and Diamondbacks, or whoever."

Emily and Mom Survive First Leg of 'Race'

During Episode One, Nancy and Emily were the 10th team to arrive at the first destination, a small village overlooking the Zambezi River in Africa. Since they survived their first mission, their adventure will continue during the next episode, that runs Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBS.

Episode One will re-air Sunday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., after the "60 Minutes" broadcast. Emily and Nancy have agreed to not reveal the show's final outcome. The race winner will earn $1 million.
