Sports Update for Sept. 23
FOOTBALL
Despite a record performance by senior wide receiver Jonathon Cooper and physical play by both the Bearkat offense and defense, NCAA Division I-A Northern Illinois handed the Bearkats their first loss of the 2001 season by a 41-16 score Saturday in DeKalb, IL. Five turnovers cost the Bearkats dearly. Total offense for the two teams was 439 yards for the Huskies (160 rushing, 279 passing) and 404 for the Bearkats (86 rushing, 318 passing). But a Sam Houston team that had not committed a turnover in its first two contests had two passes intercepted (one returned for a touchdown) and lost three fumbles. Cooper had 11 pass receptions to tie Matt Dominguez's school record set last year against Stephen F. Austin. Cooper's 205 yards receiving was the third highest single game total by a Bearkat. Josh McCown passed for 318 yards, hitting 25 of 38 including a 52 yard touchdown strike to Cooper. Joe Rauls rushed 14 times for 72 yards.
