Business Deans Gather at SHSU

Sam Houston State University is certainly qualified to host the event, in that current president James Gaertner was dean of the college of business at the University of Texas-San Antonio, recently retired president Bobby K. Marks served for many years as a business dean at SHSU, and another former business dean, James Gilmore, is retired and lives in Huntsville.

Gaertner will welcome the group at 8:30 a.m. Monday in Austin Hall. Marks and Gilmore will participate in a Former Deans Panel at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Other speakers during the conference will be John Fernandes, president and chief executive officer of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business International; Bob May, dean of the college of business at the University of Texas (Austin); Daniel Leclair, director of knowledge services for the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business International; Fernando Gomez, vice chancellor and general counsel for the Texas State University System; Marshall Hill, assistant commissioner for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; and Teri Flack, deputy commissioner for the Coordinating Board.

The Texas Council on Collegiate Education in Business was founded in 1975 to facilitate communication among member universities and to coordinate and improve business education. The group has held annual meetings since then, with Sam Houston State last hosting in 1979.

More Data Available at Gresham Library

The 60 new databases cover topics that range across business, health, science, technology, literary criticism news and Spanish language sources. The databases are linked by title and subject from the library's databases and index page.

There is also a complete list of the databases available through SHSU participation in TexShare.

There is full-text from over 4,900 journals, 220 newspapers and newswires, 200 reference books, 60,000 primary source documents, 35,500 biographies, and 2, 000 pamphlets - not to mention thousands of electronic books (available by searching the online catalog by author, title or subject).

In the process of acquiring these new resources, the library lost access to two databases, Periodical Abstracts and ABI/Inform. The replacements for these two resources provide similar coverage with many more useful features, said Ann Holder, interim director of the Gresham Library.

In addition to the TexShare resources the library has acquired access to the following databases:

• America: History and Life, a complete bibliographic reference to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present;
  
• Biological Abstracts, the leading abstracting and indexing reference publication for life sciences information;
  
• Historical Abstracts, which covers the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada, which are covered in America: History and Life);
  
• Project Muse, a collection of 100 full-text journals;
  
• Wilson's OmniFile, Full-Text, Mega Edition, a collection of H. W. Wilson full-text databases, including abstracts and indexing back to 1983 for many titles.

Links will be available later this month for OmniFile Full Text, Mega Edition, which includes Wilson Business Full Text, Education Full Text, General Sciences Full Text, Humanities Full Text, Readers' Guide Full Text, and Social Sciences Full Text.

"We are excited by the expansion of information resources available to the SHSU community," said Holder.

'The Inn at Brazoria'

The Talking Back Living History group is directed by Allen and Naomi Grundy, and includes a number of Sam Houston State University students as performers. Their work has been featured at recent General Sam Houston Folk Festivals and other museum events.

"The Inn at Brazoria" features Jane Long and her slave Kian and is a tribute to Jane Long's indomitable spirit both as a woman of courage during the Texas revolution and as the "Mother of Texas."

Long was courted by several of Texas' founding fathers, including Stephen F. Austin, in 1832. In the vignette, Kian, Jane's loyal enslaved companion, also exhibits courage and responsibility for their survival.

The program is open to the public at no charge. It is co-sponsored by the Sam Houston Museum and Region VI of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

An Afternoon With Mobius

The selections include Bach's "Suite No. 3 in C major," Larsen's "Barn Dances," and Schubert's "Octet in F major."

The performers will be Jennifer Isadore (flute), Michael Isadore (clarinet), Heather Carty (bassoon), Rufus Chaney (horn), Alisa Pederson (violin and piano), David Kerr (viola), Ellen Tounley (viola), Lisa Vosdoganes (cello) and Michael Fleming (bass).

Sam Is 'Committed to Caring'

Faculty and staff members will distribute forms allowing payroll deductions or contributions to a wide variety of area, state, and national charities.

The SHSU State Employee Charitable Campaign coordinators include Sandy Baker, Public Communication; Gayle Bullard, Student Life; Charles Capps, School of Business; Jeanette Collins, Cashiers; and Paula Culak, University Police.

Tuba Events

The annual Octubafest is also set for Octuba 14 and 16. All recitals will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

Daniel was a member of the United States Air Force Band for 22 years and was principal tubist with the Air Force Concert Band for 13 years, frequently performing as a soloist.

He also performed with the Air Force Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Players, and the Camerata Brass Quintet. His teaching experience includes low brass positions at Virginia Commonwealth University and Fairfax County, Va.

He is a life member of the Tubist University Brotherhood Association, he has held several offices, including president, and is currently on the association's board of directors.

'Implement' Exhibit Closes

Bals is a Midland artist, and will be present at the closing reception to visit and discuss her work.
