Sports Update for Sept. 30
FOOTBALL
With a 3-1 record after a September schedule that called for three road trips, the Sam Houston State football team is preparing for a crucial Parents Weekend home encounter with Northwestern State Saturday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. at Bowers Stadium. The game will be the Southland Football League opener for both teams. Sam Houston State and Northwestern State each have brought prestige victories to the SFL with wins over NCAA Division I-A opponents. The Bearkats defeated Louisiana-Monroe in their opener. The Demons knocked off TCU in overtime a week ago.
This past weekend, Sam Houston defeated Mississippi Valley State 68-13 in Itta Bena, MS. The Bearkat "kick block" team set a school record with four blocks. DeJuan Davis earned SFL "Special Teams Player of the Week" with two punt blocks, both recovered for touchdowns. Mark Hughes and Kelvin Randall each blocked a field goal. The 68 points represented Sam Houston State's second highest point total in an NCAA Division I-AA football game.
