SHSU Update for Week of Sept. 30

'A Grand Night for Singing'

Performances are in the Showcase Theatre in the University Theatre Center, at 8 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 3) through Saturday (Oct. 6), with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Tickets are $12 or $10 with senior citizen or SHSU student identification. Call 936.294.1339 for reservations.

"This musical extravaganza provides a wealth of delightful entertainment for any theatre-goer," said Penny Hasekoester, theatre manager. "Director/choreographer Jonathan Charles pumps up the pizzazz, keeping the audience on their toes throughout each and every number with his dazzling vision.

"The show swings from the whimsical "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" to the blissfully romantic "Some Enchanted Evening," and everything is most definitely up to date in "Kansas City," one of the show's brightest and most rousing numbers."

The show features six men and six women: Tye Blue, Matt Daugherty, Amber Fussell, Daniel Hronek, Amanda LaVergne, Eric Mota, Natasha Ospina, Stephen Pavalock, Sarah Ripper, Heather Scheffel, Jalynn Steele and Matt Tompkins.

Junior theatre major Kevin Swanlund is the stage manager, while LouAnn Miles, executive secretary for SHSU Career Services, is the musical director. The set was designed by senior theatre major Amanda Bauer, with sophomore Paul Coperhaver designing lighting and senior John Barton creating costumes.

Society Wins Awards, Seeks Members

Kappa Delta Pi is an honor society for university students majoring in education. Students with at least a 3.0 grade point average who intend to become teachers may apply for membership through Monday (Oct. 1).

Two representatives of the Delta Theta Chapter, which has approximately 60 members, will attend the convocation and receive the award--Brooke Cotton, chapter president; and Laverne Warner, chapter counselor.

The organization and award are international in scope, with a committee judging entries on the basis of recognition, ideals, practices, inquiry, reflections, professional and leadership development and fellowship.

The SHSU chapter sponsors an annual Celebration of Teaching event for high school seniors in the region who are interested in becoming teachers. Now in its 14th year, this year's Celebration will be hosted at SHSU on Oct. 26. The chapter also participates in the Reading is Fundamental Week scheduled each April.

'Terrorism Intelligence' is Speech Topic

Moore's speech is being sponsored by the Golden Key International Honor Society as part of their monthly "Coffee at 5:05" speaker series. Coffee, cokes and cookies will be provided.

More information is available on the Golden Key Website. Faculty, staff, students, and members of the community are welcome. There is no admission fee.

Scholarship Donor Appreciation Luncheon

This year's luncheon is expected to be the biggest yet in participants, said Sandy Chapman, assistant director for university advancement, with approximately 150 donors and students indicating they plan to attend.

The luncheon provides an opportunity for scholarship donors to meet their student recipients. During the program, two scholarship recipients will address the group.

The students will share their feelings about receiving a scholarship, talk about their experiences at SHSU and give thanks to all donors who attend. This year, the student speakers are from Arts & Sciences and Education and Applied Science.

Auction Planned

Items up for auction include theater seats, stainless steel sinks, air compressor, office furniture, lawn mowers, bicycles, typewriters, air conditioners, televisions, plasma cutter, water heaters, and 1996 and 1998 University Police Department Chevrolet Lumina cars.

Also, light fixtures, tables, air conditioner sleeves, chairs, file cabinets, copiers, musical instruments, doors, fire extinguishers, fax machines and blackboards.

The items will be available for inspection from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on the day of the sale. Items will be available for removal until 2 p.m. the day of the sale or between 8 a.m. and noon and 1-5 p.m. the week after the sale.

In preparation for the sale, there will be no property warehouse pickups or deliveries beginning Wednesday (Oct. 3).

Faculty Recital is Sunday

Selections include J. S. Bach's "Sonata in E Flat," Jan Krzywicki's "Ballade," Anthony Plog's "Three Miniatures," G. P. Telemann's "Three Dances in a minor for Flute and Tuba," Neal Corwell's "Aboriginal Voices," and Richard Strauss's "Concerto in E Flat."

Robert Daniel was principal tubist with the United States Air Force Band and has been active as a soloist and featured with a variety of ensembles. Kathryn Hutchins Daniel served as principal flutist, section leader, and soloist with the United States Navy Band, was a soloist with the Boston Pops and has performed at Carnegie Hall.

Whatley received bachelor's and master's degrees at Sam Houston State in piano performance, as a student of John Paul and Charlotte Tull, and is working toward his doctorate in organ performance at the University of Texas in Austin.

Daniel and other SHSU and guest musicians will hold Octubafest recitals at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 and 16 in the Recital Hall.
