Four Selected for Induction
Into Bearkat Hall of Honor


Football, baseball and golf were the sports of this year's Bearkat Hall of Honor inductees who have gone from outstanding accomplishments on Sam Houston State playing fields to careers of professional accomplishment and service.

They were selected by the Sam Houston State University Lettermen Association for induction during 2001 Homecoming Activities.

Richard Dyer
  • Richard W. "Yank" Dyer lettered in baseball in 1958-62, including two years in which the Bearkats reached the NAIA national tournament. He was also on an amateur baseball team that won a national championship, was an honored student, majoring in accounting, has had a successful banking career with several institutions, and now lives in Houston.
  • Dennis Hobbs
    Dennis Hobbs
  • Dennis Hobbs was an all-conference and all-America golfer at Sam Houston State University in 1976 and 1977, leading the Bearkats to a 2nd place NAIA national finish his senior year. He is an accountant and financial planner in Temple and has served in a number of public offices, including mayor of the city of Temple.
  • Ben Hooker
    Ben Hooker
  • Ben D. Hooker was a lineman for the Sam Houston State University football team during the 1956-58 period in which the team played in two post-season bowl games, the Refrigerator Bowl in Evansville, Indiana, and the Christmas Bowl in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Since then he has been a coach and public school administrator, and now lives in Tenaha.
  • Claude Reinke
    Claude Reinke
  • Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Claude W. Reinke lettered four years in football (1961-65) was all-Texas and all-Lone Star Conference, and a leader while on campus as well as in his military career. He served 32 years in the U. S. Marine Corps and is now publisher of a daily newspaper in Riverside County in Southern California.



    The Hall of Honor induction banquet is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at White Hall. Luncheon tickets are $20 each, and may be obtained from Jack Kyle, secretary/treasurer of the Sam Houston State University Lettermen Association, at (936) 295-5953.
