Leadership Challenge Offers
Inventory, Improvement

"Overwhelmingly, research is telling us that potential employers are looking for leaders," said Carlton Green, acting director of student activities and the program coordinator. "One of the by-products of this training is that our student organizations will be stronger and we will be developing a community of leaders."

The program begins at 4 p.m. Friday, with dinner at 6 p.m. and a keynote address by Linda Webber Gorski, former director of student activities and dean of student life at SHSU and director of student development at Texas Woman's University.

After speaking on "what I wish I would have known when I was a student leader," she will guide students through a leadership practices inventory to assess their abilities in five areas. These include:

• Challenging the process,
  
• Inspiring a shared vision,
  
• Enabling others to act,
  
• Modeling the way, and
  
• Encouraging the heart.

"After students complete the inventory, they will see where they rank in relations to other students," said Green. "We hope the results will guide them in their selection of workshops on Saturday."

Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, students will have the opportunity to attend four workshops presented by university faculty and staff. Presenters include Doug Ulrich, Laverne Warner, Mary Jo Cochran, Robert Williams, Marry Ellen Simms, Scoobie Woods, Bernice Strauss, Todd Johnson, Sarah Altes, Donna Rowe, Joi Maria Williams and LaDawn Ashley.

Also on the Saturday program will be a luncheon address by the Rev. Kenneth Levingston, pastor of the St. Paul and St. James United Methodist Churches in Huntsville, and a recent graduate of the Southern Methodist University Perkins School of Theology.

Saturday afternoon in addition to workshops there will be roundtable discussions led by the morning presenters.

There is no cost for the program, sponsored by the Department of Student Activities and the Program Council, and any interested student is eligible to participate. For more information, contact Green at 936.294.3652.
