Administrative Changes

James F. Gaertner was named Friday as the 12th president of Sam Houston State University.

The university presidency was not the only personnel matter at this week's regents meeting, with a number of additional key administrative changes approved as well as faculty promotions and tenure.

The Texas State University System Board of Regents held its regular quarterly meeting Thursday and Friday on the Lamar University campus in Beaumont. Approved administrative personnel changes included:

  • Thomas A. Wood, former assistant and associate dean in the College of Education at the University of Texas at El Paso, as dean of the College of Education and Applied Science;

  • Gary A. Bouse, former executive director of university advancement, as vice president for university advancement;

  • James W. Marquart, professor and interim director of the National Institute of Victim Studies, as senior project director of the National Institute of Victim Studies;

  • Rita J. Watkins, project coordinator of the Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas, as project director of the institute;

  • Kevin L. Hayes, assistant director of development, as director of alumni relations;

  • Donna M. Desforges, former special assistant to the provost/vice chancellor at the University of Wisconsin (Stevens Point), as chair of the psychology and philosophy department;

  • James Van Roekel, former assistant professor in the Gresham Library, as director of Academic Instructional Technology and Distance Learning;

  • Tyrone Bledsoe, former vice president for enrollment and student services at North Carolina Wesleyan College, as associate vice president for student services and dean of student life;

  • Frank Parker, former assistant dean for judicial affairs in student services, to associate dean of student life.

Faculty promotions, effective in the 2001 fall semester, included:
Clyde P. Bagley to professor in agricultural sciences; Linda G. Duvall to associate professor in accounting; Donald G. Freeman to associate professor in economics and international business; Rodney J. Henningsen to professor in criminal justice; William V. Hyman to professor in health and kinesiology; J. Ann Jerabek to associate professor in the Gresham Library; Mark L. Klespis to professor in mathematics, computer science and statistics.

Also, William H. Leavell to professor in general business and finance; Corliss C. Lentz to associate professor in political science; Phillip M. Lyons to associate professor in criminal justice; Balasundram Maniam to associate professor in general business and finance; David K. Marcus to professor in psychology and philosophy; Linda S. Meyer to assistant professor in the Gresham Library; Mitchell J. Muehsam to professor in economics and international business.

Also, Kweethai C. Neill to associate professor in health and kinesiology; Gary L. Oden to professor in health and kinesiology; Alcibiades G. Policarpo to associate professor in English and foreign languages; Debra P. Price to associate professor in language, literacy and special populations; Joan L. Prouty to professor in curriculum and instruction; Victor E. Sower to professor in management and marketing; and Victoria B. Titterington to associate professor in criminal justice.

Of those promoted, Lyons, Maniam, Neill, Freeman, Lentz and Titterington were also granted tenure.

Also granted tenure were Hugh S. Fullerton, associate professor in public communication; Rosanne S. Keathley, assistant professor in health and kinesiology; Sylvia R. Taube, assistant professor in curriculum and instruction; and Kip D. Wile, assistant professor in music; and Sudeep Vyapari, assistant professor in agricultural sciences.
