Health Center Director
Gives Meningitis Information
Keith Lott, director of the Health Center at Sam Houston State University, said Tuesday that there has been no confirmed case of meningitis on the SHSU campus or in the Huntsville area.
"This situation has received quite a bit of media attention and there is some incorrect information out there," said Lott. "There is no need for Sam Houston State University faculty, staff, and students to panic despite the recent news of confirmed cases of meningitis in Montgomery County."
The Health Center has not issued any formal recommendations regarding meningitis vaccinations and will not do so in the absence of confirmed cases.
"Presently, the Health Center is informing students, faculty, and staff of the facts regarding meningitis and letting them make their own informed decisions regarding vaccinations. The vaccine is available to faculty, staff, and students for $62.60."
The Health Center is advising students, faculty, and staff to be on alert for the symptoms of meningitis which include:
- fever
- severe headache
- stiffness of neck / back
- nausea or vomiting
- skin rash.
The Texas Department of Health has also set up a Meningitis Hotline at 1-888-883-9997 for anyone who would like more information.
