The look of the population on the SHSU campus will dramatically change the weekend of Oct. 5-7. Hundreds of moms and dads will overtake the campus during Survivor: Parents' Weekend 2001.
The theme for this year's weekend plays off the CBS hit reality show Survivor. "For the challenge, for the Bearkat spirit, and for the glory," parents are asked to participate in one of Sam Houston State University's best traditions, sponsored by the SHSU Parents' Association (SHSUPA) and the Office of Student Life. Parents are in for a weekend of fun and adventure on campus. The weekend will convene at the White Hall Banquet Room at 6 p.m. on Oct. 5 as part of Fearless Friday activities. The hour long "Heart of a Champion" Leadership Reception will be followed by a production of "It's a Grand Night for Singing" at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre Center. Parents begin Survival Saturday activities at 9 a.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Lobby where registration will take place. An afternoon of activities on campus are planned including a scavenger hunt, a parent-student Generation Gap game, sorority open houses, choir performances, a rappelling demonstration by the ROTC Cadets, and building tours of Austin Hall and Peabody Library. Special exhibitions and demonstrations are also planned at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum on Survival Saturday. Parents and students can watch ladies spinning wool, potters making dishes, soldiers firing weapons, blacksmiths beating iron, Cherokees making crafts, and children playing games popular during the 19th century. A SHSUPA Meeting is scheduled from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Auditorium, when scholarship winners will be announced. During the afternoon activities, parents can work up an appetite for the 4 p.m. Bearkat Barbecue, Kat Kall, and Alumni Association Tailgate Party at Bowers Stadium. All are welcome to gather for the SHSU vs. Northwestern State football game beginning at 6 p.m. This year, Parents' Weekend will be held in conjunction with Huntsville's 27th Annual Fair on the Square in downtown Huntsville, just blocks from the SHSU campus. Triumphant Sunday will bring the weekend to a close during Bearkat Family Breakfast from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in Cafe Belvin. An hour long on campus Worship Service is planned beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Farrington Pit by Crossroads, an interdenominational Christian Organization. Two methods of registration are available. Parents can preregister through The Office of Student Life or they may obtain a registration package in the CJ Center Lobby the morning of Survival Saturday. The Parents' Victory Package includes events on campus, the Bearkat Barbecue, and admission to the football game. The Parents' Survival Package includes events on campus and the Bearkat Barbecue. Tickets to "It's a Grand Night for Singing" can be purchased through the University Theatre Center box-office the night of the performance or by calling 936.294.1339.
