Campus Preview Day Attendance Continues to Grow

The Undergraduate Admissions staff, along with faculty members and student volunteers, provide two campus preview days per year.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions completed yet another Saturday@Sam Program on March 31, breaking spring attendance records for the third straight year. Saturday@Sam is the university's campus preview day. The event takes place biannually, with one event per semester. The goal of Saturday@Sam is to provide prospective students with a sampling of what Sam Houston State University has to offer.

Attendance for the Spring 2001 day exceeded expectations and was the largest attendance recorded for any Saturday@Sam program, said Joey Chandler, Director of Undergraduate Admissions. 748 students and 879 guests attended the March 31st event, bringing the total to 1627. Fall 2000 had a total attendance of 1226 visitors and spring 2000 had a total attendance of 1570 visitors.

"It makes us feel good [to see attendance rising]," said Roman Huizar, Fall 2001 Program Coordinator. "Students are becoming more interested in SHSU."

The admissions office boasts that "You and your guests have the opportunity to see for yourselves the friendly atmosphere that awaits you as a student at SHSU." Students are not only able to get an in-depth look at the campus but also into programs in which they may be interested.

During the day, visitors have the opportunity to attend two academic sessions, get information on student activities, attend a financial aid fair, take a campus tour, and see special performances by the Orange Pride Dance Team and SHSU cheerleaders. Information desks are also available for undergraduate admissions, new student orientation, residence life, and Army ROTC. Most events take place in the Coliseum.

Considerations for improvement on future programs include a later start time and some type of morning entertainment for students.

In addition to the countless faculty and staff members that take part in the event, 116 students volunteers also participated this spring.

Upcoming dates for Saturday@Sam include November 17, 2001, and March 30, 2002.
