Sports Update for Oct. 20
FOOTBALL
Rallying for 10 fourth quarter points and holding Stephen F. Austin to just 94 yards passing and 257 total yards on offense, Sam Houston spoiled the number 23 ranked Lumberjacks' Homecoming 10-7 Saturday at Nacogdoches. A 15-yard interception return by Michael Thompson set up an eight-play, 37-yard drive for the winning touchdown. Maurice Harris scored from the two with 6:36 remaining for the winning points.In his third start of the season, quarterback Travis Tobaben passed for 216 yards including crucial fourth down completions on both scoring drives to lead the Kats to their most productive offensive output of the 2002 season.
Following the game, Sam Houston State senior defensive lineman Kelvin Randall was honored as Southland Conference Defensive "Player of the Week." Randall led the Bearkat defense with 10 tackles, including two for losses as SHSU pulled an upset with a 10-7 victory at Stephen F. Austin. Vick King, who rushed for 208 yards on 25 carries to lead McNeese to a 28-20 victory over Jacksonville State was SLC "Offensive Player of the Week." James Wilcox of Nicholls State, who kicked a career-best 42-yard field goal for the winning points in a 24-21 win at Southwest Texas, was SLC "Special Teams Player of the Week."
The victory over number 23 SFA marked Sam Houston State's 14th win over an NCAA Division I-AA top 25 ranked opponent since the Bearkats moved up to the I-AA level in 1986. Sam Houston State now has won five of its last seven contests against the Lumberjacks.
Sam Houston State plays host to NCAA Division I-AA number two ranked McNeese State in the Bearkats' homecoming game at Bowers Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. The Kats are 10-6 at Homecoming in their 16 seasons on the AstroTurf at Bowers Stadium.
HALL OF HONOR
Four outstanding former Bearkat athletes -- three who played football and one baseball player -- will be inducted into the Sam Houston Lettermen Hall of Honor Saturday at Homecoming. Induction ceremonies will take place at the Hall of Honor luncheon at 11:30 a.m. and the new inductees will be introduced at the football game. The four inductees are:
Lish Adams of Dallas
All-America linebacker for SHSU in 1987 and 1988, earning
All-Conference honors three years in a row (from 1986 to 1988). Today,
Adams works for the D'Marc Medical home medical equipment company.
Phil Harmening of Houston
Punter and kicking specialist who earned All-Lone Star Conference
honors in 1979, 1980, and 1981, totaling 137 kick scoring points. Today
he is a golf professional.
Ron Kainer of Tomball
Pitcher on three NAIA World Series teams whose career totals of 281.3
innings pitched and 1.50 earned run average from 1972 to 1975 still are
school marks. Kainer now works for the BP energy company.
Reggie Lewis of DeSoto
All-American quarterback for the Kats in 1987 who ranks second in SHSU
history in passing with 4,269 yards and 30 touchdowns from 1984 to 1987.
Reggie works for the Office of Inspector General of the Texas Department
of Human Services investigation division.
VOLLEYBALL
Carrie Sartain knocked down 19 kills and Liz Dahlstrom and Chrissy Engle each added 11 kills to lead Sam Houston State to a vital four-game victory over the University of Texas at San Antonio on the road at the UTSA Convocation Center in the Alamo City.The Bearkats hit .252 as a team with 59 total kills to win 30-26 26-30 30-17 30-18. The victory lifts Sam Houston State to 6-5 in Southland Conference action and 12-10 for the year. The UTSA Roadrunners drop to 4-16 for the season and 3-7 in league play.
Karlee Butler picked up 50 assists as the Bearkats' setter. The Sam Houston State defense totaled seven team blocks, led by Teri Palmer with four.
Sam Houston State returns home for three important matches during Homecoming week as the Bearkats play host to Stephen F. Austin State on Tuesday, Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, and Northwestern State on Saturday. All three matches at Johnson Coliseum begin at 7 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Bearkats will have their final warm-up before deciding the 2002 Southland Conference championship when both the Sam Houston State men's and women's cross country teams compete in the Houston Invitational at Texas National Golf Course in Willis on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The SLC meet will be held Monday, Nov. 4, at Natchitoches, La., hosted by Northwestern State University.Sam Houston State's men's runners were the runners-up among 18 teams in the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 12. Three Bearkats placed among the top 20 individuals as Joe Amburn was 10th (27:02), Raul Villarreal was 11th (27:05), and Isia Llanes was 19th (27:52). Gaby Mendoza led the Bearkat women with a 13th place individual finish (22:47) as the women placed tenth as a team.
GOLF
Sophomore Shaun Goodwin was 17th individually with a 227 54-hole total to lead the Sam Houston State men's golf team to a 10th place team finish at the Stephen F. Austin Crown Colony Classic Oct. 14-15. Arkansas-Little Rock won the team championship. Jeremiah Shields of Arkansas State was the individual medalist.Both Sam Houston State's men's and women's teams play this week. The men complete their fall schedule Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 21-22, at the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Invitational at Ruston, La. The women also play Monday and Tuesday in the Lamar Cardinal Invitational in Beaumont. Sam Houston State will host a women's golf invitational at Waterwood National Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 4-5.
TENNIS
The Bearkat women's tennis team completed their 2002 fall semester schedule by competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships in Fort Worth and by winning the second annual fall "Super Dual" meet in Nacogdoches with Stephen F. Austin State.Mounia Hassib and Fati Benboubker won both their singles matches at number one and two and teamed for a pair of doubles victories to lead the Sam Houston State women's tennis team to a 10-8 victory over Stephen F. Austin in the "Super Dual" Tuesday. Sophomore Erika Rudich posted the winning point for the Bearkats with a big come-from-behind victory.
The Bearkat tennis team qualified four singles players and two doubles teams for the prestigious ITA Regional. Mounia Hassib, Fati Benboubker, Erika Rudich and Tara Shelander received berths in the ITA Regional singles main draw. Shelander was forced to default due to a foot injury.
