Faculty Members Report Findings at Social Science Meeting

Faculty members Debbi Hatton, Ruth Pate and Ardyth Sohn from public communication presented their findings on a study about the challenges facing SHSU faculty and administrators. The study concentrated on the role technology plans in higher education, and how technological expertise affects promotion, salary and tenure decisions for women.

"Preliminary conclusions from the research state even though both men and women agree that learning and using classroom technology is important, more than 50 percent of the women polled are more apt to use online classroom management," said Pate.

Joanne Ardovini-Brooker, from the SHSU sociology department, serves on the program committee for Women's Caucus for SSSA.

Other SHSU participants at the meeting included Caron Cates, David Bailey, Douglas H. Constance, Kim Karr, Charles Mukoro, Juliet Sanford, Valery Wakefield, Kendra Watson, Janeen Skaggs-Longfellow, Sabrina Criteser, Stephanie Nelson, Alessandro Bonanno, Diane C. Bates, Jenny Crone, Furgen Deng and Beverly Mason, all from the SHSU sociology department.

Also, George Samuels (economics); Caroline Crimm, Bernadette Pruitt and Tracy Steele (history); Michael Yawn, Mitzi Mahoney, Jim Carter, Bill Carroll and Tamara Waggener (political science); Tammy Garland, Scott Vollum, Victoria Titterington and Dale Ardovini-Brooker (criminal justice); and Susan Strickland (library science).

The SSSA is an academic conference for one of the oldest social science associations in the United States. The different affiliates include interdisciplinary and thematic sessions, economics, history, international studies, political science, social work, sociology, and women's caucus.

University Participates in Walker County Fair Activities

SHSU President James Gaertner, representing the SHSU Buyers Group, bought the Grand Champion Lamb at the WCFA Premium Sale. The lamb was purchased for $3,250 from Kim Taylor, granddaughter of retired SHSU employee Ruby Miller.

The SHSU Buyers Group also purchased Lauren Wiggins's First Place Cookies for $400 at the Baked and Canned Goods Sale. Lauren is the daughter of Beverly Wiggins of the Computer Services Department.

At the Freezer Sale, the SHSU Physical Plant Department purchased $1150 in animals from prospective SHSU students, which included a hog from Shenequia Perry, a hog from Channce Winter, and a goat from Randi Moxley.

Orchestra and Strings Concert

Carol Smith is the conductor, and Andrew Wilson and Josh Smith will be featured on violin.

The program is highlighted by 20th century compositions including a medley from "Schindler's List" and "Concertino for Oboe and String Orchestra" by one of the SHSU School of Music's beloved professors, the late Fisher Tull.

An additional performance at the First Baptist Church on April 27 at 7:30 p.m. will feature the orchestra with the SHSU Symphony and Symphonic Chorus.

SAAFEHouse Plans Campus Visit

Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and provide material and information on sexual assault.

The Sam Houston State University Counseling Center is sponsoring the visit.

Fulbright Faculty Workshops

The workshop will provide information on opportunities for international research and teaching and will include presentations on the Fulbright Scholar Program, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Awards, and other international grant and exchange programs.

Carol Robles, senior program officer at the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, will discuss lecturing and research opportunities in 140 countries, how to make contacts abroad, preparing a successful Fulbright application, and how a campus can host a visiting Fulbright scholar from abroad.

There is no charge for the workshop.

General Sam Houston Folk Festival

Live musical groups performing folk and acoustic music will entertain during the festival. The groups include Eddie and Martha Adcock, Steven Fromolz, Clover and Rachel Carroll, Caroline Herring, Pine Island Station, Peter Keane, and the Sweet Song String Band.

Also Dane Sterling, Roz Brown, John Greenberg, Grady Lee, Shorty Long and Mike Blakely.

She will be accompanied by Heather Wardrup on piano and assisted by Cara Davis on flute.

Student recitals at Sam Houston State University are open to the public and free of admission charge.
