Orchestra, Choirs to Perform Season Finale

The concert features masterworks of Beethoven. Carol Smith will conduct the orchestra in the Overture to "The Creatures of Prometheus." The chorus will then come on stage and join the orchestra for Beethoven's "Mass in C Major." Allen Hightower will conduct the choirs and orchestra in the Mass, and SHSU students will be among the vocal soloists.

Admission is $5 for non-SHSU students and $8 for adults. SHSU students are admitted free of charge.

DeMars Receives Faculty Grant

The association sponsors the Excellence in Journalism project through the Radio Television News Directors' Foundation to place a select number of university professors in broadcast newsrooms. The program is designed to help professors teaching broadcast journalism to be fully up-to-date with the industry.

Based on this grant, DeMars will spend several weeks this summer working at KHQA TV, the CBS affiliate in Quincy, Ill. The program allows DeMars to work as a TV producer and reporter, and to be fully involved in KHQA's newsroom.

Besides his 15 years as a university professor, DeMars also has over 10 years full-time experience at several commercial broadcast stations- doing radio and TV news, as well as DJ, production, sales, and sports play-by-play work, and serving as program director of then-KMLA in Texarkana and general manager of then-KTRX in Tarkio/Rock Port Missouri. His radio work in Texas also includes announcing jobs at Houston's 93.7 FM when it was 'K-Lite,' at Mix 96.5 and Sunny 99.1, and in Dallas at B97.9.

The foundation will pay a stipend for the work, and also provides housing, a rental vehicle, and a daily meals allotment. The program begins with a 5-day trip to Washington, DC in May for an orientation and concludes with a debriefing session at the organization's next annual conference. The total grant amount including all the funds and travel expenses is approximately $10,000.

Become Acquainted with the Lone Star Trail

Individuals who sign up will receive directions to the start. Participants will receive a bottle of "Rec Sports Water" and a custom SHSU Lone Star Trail patch.

Get Ready for Faculty/Staff Golf Tournament

Teams of four persons, comprised of SHSU faculty/staff or affiliates will play a best ball scramble. Teams may consist of all men, all women, or any combination of the two. Single entries will be accepted and teams will be formed from those entries.

The $40 per person entry fee includes: 18 hole green fee; one-half cart fee; bucket of range balls; goodie bag; soft drinks by Coca-Cola; individual and team awards for 1st and 2nd place; and a Texas barbecue lunch.

There will be a post-tournament raffle, where everyone will walk away with a prize. The winning team will be given the traveling trophy for one year.

Contests include: Men's and Women's Longest Drive; Closest to the Pin; and Putting Contest.

The entry deadline is Wednesday, May 8, by 5:30 p.m. The first 20 people who register and pay will receive a Rec Sports t-shirt.

Students to Discuss Middle East Issues

The event will feature presentations by professors Caroline Crimm and Nick Pappas of the Department of History. Following the presentation, students and other audience members will be able to ask questions of the panelists.

Professor Discusses Child Abuse Prevention

The topic of the program was community policing and child protection. April is National Child Abuse Prevention month, and Lyons, who has conducted extensive research on the subject, was a guest on the Community Matters segment. The host of the program was Gary Melton, director of the University of South Carolina's Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life.

Lyons and Melton were collaborators on the 1998 book "No Place to Go," which identified problems relating to the care and civil commitment of children with emotional disturbances.

The publication of a follow-up to the book is forthcoming later this year.
