SHSU Update for Week of April 7

Program Features Sacred American Music

"Sing to God," a program of sacred American art songs, will be presented by the Sam Houston State University School of Music Sunday afternoon (April 7) at 2 p.m. in the campus Recital Hall.

The program includes songs of faith and devotion that are a part of American culture and history.

The recital will feature performances by Robin Fisher, soprano; Jack Coldiron, baritone; and John Cozza, piano.

Fisher studied in Europe and received the coveted Artist's Diploma, cum laude, from the Vienna Hochschule fur Musik. Following her professional debut at the Salzburg Festival, she signed a solo contract with one of Germany's strongest regional opera companies, the Wuppertal Opera.

In concert, she has performed over 16 solo oratorio roles with such ensembles as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Wuppertal Symphony, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra and the Fort Worth Early Music ensemble. Currently, she is assistant professor of voice at Baylor University.

Coldiron received the bachelor of music (cum laude) from Stetson University and the master of church music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He has studied at the German Center for Music Education in Stuttgart, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music, both in London.

He is well known in the music community as a recitalist and oratorio soloist. His recent performances have included: Messiah, Elijah, Requiems by Brahms, Mozart and Faure, 'Israel in Egypt,' 'Judas Maccabaeus,' 'Mass in C,' and 'Five Mystical Songs.'

Cozza was named director of piano accompanying in the Baylor School of Music in 1994. He holds both the bachelor and master's degrees from the University of Southern California where he was valedictorian of the School of Music in 1983. His doctorate is in piano performance, chamber music and accompanying from Northwestern University.

As a Rotary Foundation Scholar, he studied at the Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna where he completed advanced degrees in piano performance. He has performed as a collaborative artist for singers and instrumentalists throughout the United States, and his international engagements have included such European centers as Vienna, Bologna, Milan, Cologne and Budapest.

Piano Concerto Festival

The 2002 Annual Piano Concerto Festival will feature performances by the students of Clive Swansbourne on Tuesday (April 9) at 7:30 p.m. on the Sam Houston State University campus.

The piano concertos will include works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Grieg. Swansbourne will accompany at a second piano.
