SHSU Update for Week of Aug. 18

Students Begin to Arrive on Campus

The Department of Student Activities has a busy week planned to introduce students to campus life.

Sunday at 6 p.m., "RavenFest!" will take place in the Lowman Student Center Entertainment Center.

On Monday, students can look forward to Sigma Tau Gamma's "Battle of the Bands" in the Old Main Pit, a drive-in movie at Colony Park, and a poster sale in the LSC Mall which will be going on all week.

On Tuesday, students are invited to attend "Playfair" in the new LSC Ballroom. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students can "Make Your Own Music Video" in the LSC Art Gallery.

On Wednesday, the first day of class, the Residence Hall Association will host a "Party in the Pit" at the site of Old Main.

"Bearkat Mania" will be going on in the LSC Mall on Wednesday and Thursday.

Also on Thursday, there will be an Interfraternity Council pool tournament in the LSC Entertainment Center, a National Pan-Hellenic Council party at the Walker County Fairgrounds, and Panhellenic Recruitment will begin on Sorority Hill.

Fall Mini Orientation

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the theater area on the first floor of the Lowman Student Center.

Students will be directed to an adviser for course advisement and will receive assistance in registering for classes.

Students who have registered for classes but would like to learn more about Sam Houston State University will meet with orientation leaders who will provide information about various departments in the university and lead campus tours.

The program is informal and is free of charge, according to Mary Ellen Sims, assistant dean of students and coordinator of orientation programs. Students who have questions about various services or departments at SHSU are encouraged to participate in the program, which will last approximately three to four hours.

New Faculty on Campus

In the College of Arts and Sciences new faculty include: Kimberly Bell, English; Susannah Bruce, history; Karen Epps, music; Ben Gillespie, geography; Michael Henderson, art; Jacqueline Jensen, mathematics; Julie Jones, mathematics; Sheryl Murphy-Manley, music; Jacqueline Theodori, speech communication; Kista Tucker, dance; and Kenneth Wunch, biology.

In the College of Business Administration new faculty are: Sue Hwang, economics; Juliana Lilly, management; Hiranya Nath, economics; Robert Stretcher, finance; and Larry VanOver, management information systems.

In the College of Education and Applied Science: Emily DeFrance, education; Carole Funk, education; Roger Hanagriff, agriculture; Diana Nabors, education; Barbara Polnick, education; Michael Ramsey, kinesiology; Marilyn Rice, education; Carolyn Robinson, agriculture; and Susan Wegmann, education.

New faculty in the Department of Military Science are Rosanna Dolphin and Paul Lohmann.

Victim Studies Institute Co-Sponsors Conference

The conference, which was held Aug. 4-7, brought together over 250 researchers, including 20 researchers from Europe and Africa, to present and discuss their findings on a wide variety of issues pertaining to child victimization. One entire day was devoted to abuse of children by the clergy.

Professors Janet Mullings and James Marquart of the Institute presented findings from their research on the incidence of child maltreatment---physical, emotional and sexual abuse---among delinquent youth in the Texas Youth Commission.

Irby Receives Leadership Award

The purpose of the award is to recognize and honor an outstanding Texas educator who has demonstrated exemplary leadership, supported professionalism for women in education, and exemplifies the mission of the Texas Council of Women School Executives.

Irby is a professor of education administration at Sam Houston State University, and has been a primary source in the continuing development of the Texas Council of Women School Executives. She served on the organization's board and as its president in 1996-97.

She was also a major catalyst in the launch of the council's monograph. She has been recognized as a model mentor, and she is a well-known presenter at conferences, as well as a promoter and supporter of the organization.

The award was presented to Irby at the annual summer conference of the council.

Library Launches New Online Catalog

The new version of the catalog, known as SamCat, will allow users to view the library's holdings, link to e-books and e-journals, connect to other libraries' catalogs, create a personal account for notification of new items, check accounts to see when books are due, and place holds.

Folk Festival Board Presents Check

The $7,000 check is designated for capital improvements at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. The money was profit generated from the General Sam Houston Folk Festival held annually in the spring.

This year's support to the museum from the Folk Festival totaled $12,000, according to Patrick Nolan, director of the Museum. During preparations for the festival, $5,000 was spent for permanent electrical installations on the Museum grounds.

Members of the Folk Festival board who attended the check presentation were Mike McManus, chairman; Judy Kayse, vendor chairman; Sunny Fulenwider, secretary-treasurer; Rhonda Ellisor, public relations chairman; and Nolan, who also serves as demonstrator chairman.

Retirement Receptions

The Department of Military Science will host a reception honoring Alicia Lukaszewski on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Austin Hall. Although she is classified as a federal employee, she has worked on campus since the fall of 1976. She is retiring as a cadet records technician.

The Office of the President will host a reception for Dorothy Wooten on Monday, Aug. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Austin Hall. She was first employed at Sam Houston State in 1965 in the library. She is retiring as assistant to the president for operations.

Physical Plant Grounds Maintenance Department will host a reception for Ola Butcher on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Austin Hall. Butcher will retire from his job as a physical plant grounds maintenance foreman. He began his career at Sam Houston State on Sept. 1, 1959, at the age of 18 as custodian in the library. He is the longest employed staff member in SHSU history.

Institutional Research and Computer Services will honor Peggy Thrasher on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. in room 122 of Academic Building 1. She began her SHSU career in the university's Counseling Center in 1981. She is retiring as the administrative assistant in the Office of Institutional Research.
