SHSU Update for Week of Aug. 25

Another Exciting Week for Students

The Division of Student Services Day will kick off the week in the Lowman Student Center Atrium and Lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday. Panhellenic Recruitment will conclude with Panhellenic Bid Day on Sorority Hill at 5 p.m.

"Campus Life Exposed," featuring Harlin Cohen, who writes an advice column for college students, will take place Monday at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum. Cohen will talk about the ups and downs of college life and how to deal with them.

Casino Night will be in the LSC Ballroom Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock.

The Health and Kinesiology Center will be the site of the Rec Sports Club Sports Fest on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., and a Bearkat Luau will take place in the LSC Mall at 8 p.m.

New Faculty/Staff Dining Room

The Club is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Coffee, sodas and pastry are available for purchase.

Faculty and staff will be able to get lunch from 11:30 to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. As participation and interest grow, ARAMARK plans to expand to Monday through Friday.

"Departments are invited to consider a block reservation to conduct formal meetings or simply build an in-group solidarity ritual," said Rick Lester, ARAMARK manager.

Huntsville Alumni Invited to Houston Reception

All Houston area alumni are invited to the reception.

There will be a drawing for two tickets to the Nov. 17 Houston Texans Football Game and Tailgate Party. Current Alumni Association members and new members who sign up at the event are eligible. The drawing will be at 8 p.m. and winners must be present at the time of the drawing.

Teske Appointed to Editorial Board

"I think it is significant that we have developed a working relationship with the Max Planck Institute and an important aspect of this is having someone from the Sam Houston State University criminal justice program appointed to this editorial board," said Teske. "This expands and strengthens our international ties and commitments."

Teske has had a long-term teaching and research relationship with the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg, Germany. He and Professor H. J. Albrecht, director of the institute and editor of the journal, have worked together on previous projects and are now collaborating on a joint comparative project focusing on the prosecution of sentencing of hate crime offenders in Germany and the United States.

Professor Albrecht has been a Beto Chair professor and has visited the Criminal Justice Center on several occasions.

Teske was selected as a Humboldt Fellow in 1980 and spent a year at the Max Planck Institute establishing and carrying out the first large-scale victimization survey in Germany. For many years he directed the Texas Crime Poll, which surveyed Texans on their perceptions of crime and the criminal justice system.
