Gary A. Bouse, vice president for university advancement at Sam Houston State University, has announced that he has accepted a position as associate vice chancellor for development and alumni relations at the University of Missouri, effective July 8.

Bouse came to Sam Houston State as executive director of advancement in February 1998, from Texas Tech University, and was promoted to vice president for university advancement in June 2001.

During his tenure, the university has experienced a significant increase in development productivity and programs, including the creation of the university's annual fund, the annual Scholarship Donor Appreciation Luncheon (held during Parents Weekend), and publication of the Heritage magazine.

"I have truly enjoyed serving Sam Houston State University, and working with Jim Gaertner and Bob Marks, which makes the decision to leave the university a very difficult one," said Bouse. "I sincerely appreciate all the support that both have given to me.

"Rebecca and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time at Sam Houston State, and working with so many great people. We have made many friendships with alumni, donors and people within the university and local community that will certainly last a lifetime.

"We truly value those friendships, and we are pleased that Jim Gaertner has the institution moving in such a positive direction. The position at Missouri is an opportunity that I did not seek, but something that became appealing as I learned more about it."

Rebecca Bouse is a secretary in the School of Music at SHSU.

"Gary Bouse has done an outstanding job of moving the entire university advancement area forward during his time at Sam Houston State University," said James F. Gaertner, SHSU president.

"He has personally assisted me greatly in key introductions and in understanding the opportunities and challenges in development for our university. Gary has been given an excellent opportunity at the University of Missouri, and we wish him, Rebecca, and their family well."

In his new position Bouse will be the second highest ranking fundraising officer at the University of Missouri-Columbia and a senior member of the vice chancellor for development and alumni relations management group, with a leadership role in the university's anticipated comprehensive campaign.

He will supervise approximately 35 employees in the advancement and development programs of the university's 10 academic colleges and schools, and work closely with prospective and current major donors to the university who have multiple interests.

The University of Missouri-Columbia has more than 24,000 students and more than 215,000 alumni.

Bouse earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&M, in 1985 and 1986, and completed his doctorate at Indiana University at Bloomington in 2001.

He has worked in advancement and fund-raising positions at Texas Tech University, Indiana University, Georgia Southern University, Auburn University, and Oklahoma State University.

His associations and affiliations include the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the National Society of Fund Raising Executives and the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. He was recently elected to the CASE District IV Board of Directors for 2002-2004.
