Brown is New Dean of College of Education and Applied Science

Genevieve Brown has been named dean of the College of Education and Applied Science at Sam Houston State University, effective Jan. 16, 2003.

Brown, who has been serving as the acting dean this semester, said she is excited about the opportunity.

"SHSU has become very dear to me," said Brown. "I appreciate so much Sam Houston's fine administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni. These groups have made my experiences here enjoyable and rewarding.

"The future of SHSU has never looked brighter," she added. "I look forward to the opportunities I have as the dean of the College of Education and Applied Science to be a contributor to the president's initiatives and to the team effort that will bring a great university to an even higher level."

Since arriving on campus in 1984, Brown has been a professor of education, the coordinator of secondary education since 1986, and the chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling since 1993.

Brown played an integral role in the development of the first doctoral program at the SHSU College of Education and Applied Science in 1997. She is a steering committee member for the National Women and Leadership Conference.

Brown, who received her doctorate of education from East Texas State University in 1979, is the co-editor and founder of the first on-line publication dedicated to examining and expanding feminine leadership worldwide, Advancing Women in Leadership (1997).

She has also been a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of at-Risk issues since 1977. She is a representative of Texas Professors of Educational Administration to the State Board of Educator Certification Task Force on Administrator Assessment, among the many professional activities she currently participates in.

Sam Houston State is the oldest teacher training institution in the Southwest, and has held continuous accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education for its educator preparation programs since 1957. Currently SHSU is accredited with probation as the university prepares for a fall 2003 on-site review.

SHSU is "accredited" by the State Board for Educator Certification through the Texas Accountability System for Educator Preparation Programs.
