SHSU Update for Week of Dec. 1

Tree of Light Ceremony

The 82nd annual Tree of Light ceremony will be held on campus Thursday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. near the Administration Building.

Hot chocolate, cookies and hot wassail will be available during the traditional celebration of the holiday season.

Those who plan to attend are asked to bring donations of non-perishable food items to benefit the S.A.A.F.E. House in Huntsville.

Good Luck, Students!

Sam Houston State University Parents' Association officers and volunteers will be handing out free apples, candy and Scantrons on Monday and Tuesday (Dec 2 and 3) between the Lowman Student Center and the Smith-Hutson Business Building, starting at 8:30 a.m. and continuing while supplies last, to help students during final exams.

Each semester, the Parents' Association hosts two Apple Days giving out more than 1,200 apples, hundreds of candy bars, and 5,000 Scantrons to Sam Houston students. The association purchases the items to give students a treat before finals.

"We know how stressful final exams can be, so we like to show our support to the entire student body and hope they each do well on their tests and final projects," says Kelly Clements, president of the association.

The Parents' Association is an organization of Sam Houston parents who actively support students through awarding scholarships and hosting special events. The association raises funds from member dues and events for its annual scholarships.

The association assists with planning Parents' Weekend each fall semester, meets with new SHSU parents during summer orientation and hosts a Homecoming tailgate party in addition to Apple Days each semester.

Parents, guardians and families of Sam Houston students are encouraged to join the association not only to support students, but also to have a primary link to the university. Through events like Parents' Weekend and a periodically published newsletter, members stay involved and informed about campus issues, events and news.

For more information about membership, volunteering with the association or scholarships, call or e-mail Parents' Association President Kelly Clements. Her phone number is 903.581.5224.

For general information call or e-mail Parents' Association Adviser Mary Ellen Sims. Her phone number is 936.294.3026.

Museum to Host Holiday Event

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will be joining with Huntsville's Trail of Lights to celebrate the holiday season on Saturday, Dec. 7, with an event entitled "Sam Houston's Christmas in Huntsville."

The cooperative of Working Artists will hold the annual Angel Show in the Walker Education Center, where unique holiday crafts will be on sale.

The Museum grounds will be the site of Raven's Rendezvous, alive with decorations, demonstrations and reenactment activities.

Guests are invited to meet the authors of Texas history books and Sam Houston biographies who will sign their works in the Walker Center atrium.

At 8 p.m. there will be a gala performance of "Gone to Texas" in the historic Old Town Theater.

For additional information about Museum programs and activities visit the museum online.

'SamWorks' Holiday Event Scheduled

The SHSU Alumni Association and President and Mrs. Gaertner will host a holiday "SamWorks" on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. in room 321 of the Lowman Student Center.

Guests are asked to enter the building through the main entrance on the second floor, and holiday attire is encouraged.
