Exhibit Features Engravings from 19th Century West

The engravings will be on display in "Travels in the Interior of North America: The Maximilian-Bodmer Expedition," in the Walker Education Center Gallery from Dec. 15 through Jan. 18, 2003.

In the exhibition museum audiences have the opportunity to see these extraordinary prints and gain an appreciation for both their artistic beauty and their value as historical and scientific documents.

Maximilian's observations on the expedition, along with Bodmer's illustrations, are still considered an important record for ecologists today. In Mouth of Fox River (Indiana), and other engravings, Bodmer displays his skill as a scientific illustrator as well as his affinity for picturesque views. His landscapes recorded the western frontier so accurately that the landmarks---where they have not been altered by time or settlement---are identifiable today.

The engravings in the exhibition were produced from the original 19th-century printing plates, which are owned by the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Neb. Pulled on a hand-operated, flat-bed press and then hand-colored, the 20th-century edition has been made in the same fashion and to the same standards as the 19th-century sets.

Swansbourne to Perform Fourth Recital in Series

The five sonatas in the program will include the famous "Les Adieux" Sonata, which charts Beethoven's conflicting emotions as his friend and patron, the Archduke Rudolph, had to pack up and leave Vienna during Napoleon's attack on that city in 1809. Especially noteworthy is the joyousness of the last movement, when the Archduke returns.

Swansbourne resumes the series on Jan. 26, 2003.

Employees Set Record for Charitable Campaign

Not only was the amount almost $7,000 more than was raised the previous year, but the participation rate increased from 35 individuals to 152 individuals in this year's campaign.

Co-chairing the event were the university's internal auditor, Karon Murff, and Emmette Jackson, professor of photography.

Hoops Over the Holidays

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. the Ladykats will host the Houston Jaguars in an exhibition game.

On Saturday, Dec. 21, the men's team will host UT-Dallas at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec. 28, the women's team will host Lamar at 4 p.m., and the men will play at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Jan. 2, the Ladykats will play Southeastern Louisiana at 5:30 p.m., and the men will play at 7:45 p.m.

The teams will be in action again on Jan. 4, when they take on Nicholls State. The women will play at 4 p.m., and the men will play at 7 p.m.

Semester Draws to an End

The university will be open during regular business hours through Dec. 20, and staff employees will return on Jan. 2.

Residence halls will be open for occupancy between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, and daytime classes will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
