Four Selected for Induction
Into Bearkat Hall of Honor

Four former athletes at Sam Houston State University have been named to the Lettermen Association Hall of Honor for 2002.

They include Lish Adams of Dallas, four-year letterman in football at the position of linebacker; Phil Harmening of Houston, four year letterman in football as a placekicker and punter; Ron Kainer of Tomball, four year letterman in baseball as a pitcher; and Reggie Lewis of DeSoto, four year letterman in football at quarterback.

The new inductees will be honored at a luncheon during 2002 SHSU Homecoming activities Oct. 26, and introduced during halftime of the SHSU/McNeese State football game that begins at 2 p.m.

Lish Adams
Lish Adams
Adams came to Sam Houston State after playing high school football in Jasper. In 1985 he was Bearkat freshman of the year, he was all-conference in 1986-88, was team most valuable defensive player in 1986-87, was an all-America selection in 1987-88, and team most valuable player in 1988.

Adams still holds the record for solo tackles in a single game, with 15. He is 3rd and 5th in season tackles, with 139 and 127, second in career tackles with 383, and third in quarterback sacks with 17.

He has worked in production and manufacturing management, owns the Bearkat Contracting company, and works for the D'Marc Medical home medical equipment company in De Soto.

Phil Harmening

Harmening played high school football at Stratford High School in the Houston area. At SHSU he was named to three all-Lone Star Conference teams, 1979-81, and was an NAIA all-America selection in 1981.

In 1981 Harmening set a Bearkat record with five field goals in a game against Howard Payne, a record which was tied in 1991. His 53-yard field goal against Howard Payne is second longest in SHSU history, and he ranks fourth in career field goals with 25, third in career extra points with 62, and fourth in career kicking points with 137.

He has worked as a commercial building inspector and is now an assistant golf pro at the Pine Crest Golf Club in Houston.

Ron Kainer
Ron Kainer
Kainer played high school baseball at Milby High School in Houston and played on Bearkat teams that finished second twice and third once in the NAIA College World Series. His 281.3 innings pitched and 1.50 earned run average from 1972-75 are current SHSU baseball records.

In 1974 Kainer struck out 20 opposing batters in one game, and his 239 career strikeouts rank second all-time. He led his 1974 and 1975 teams in strikeouts, compiling records of 11-3 and 11-4, and his 28 career wins ranks third. He was named to the NAIA all-tournament team in 1975, and that year was a team captain.

He was employed by the Amoco Production Co. and now the BP energy company, and lives in Tomball.

Reggie Lewis
Reggie Lewis
Lewis played high school football at University and Jefferson-Moore high schools in Waco. From 1983-88 he set SHSU records for total offense, and single game, season and career passing yardage.

He was all-conference in 1986 and 1987 and an all-America selection in 1987. He also set completion percentage records for a single game (88.2 percent), season 55.9 percent) and career (56.9 percent), and was the team's most valuable player in 1986 and 1987.

He has worked for the McLennan County Juvenile Probation department and now the Office of Inspector General of the Texas Department of Human Services investigation division in Dallas.
