University Narrows List to Eight

By David Arkin/Managing Editor
The Huntsville Item

A Sam Houston State University committee has weeded through 50 applications and selected its top eight candidates for a new vice president for university advancement.

University officials this week provided The Huntsville Item with a list of the top candidates for the job, which was vacated after Gary Bouse resigned and took a position at the University of Missouri.

Dean Lewis, who serves as chairman for the selection committee, said the candidates will be asked to respond to a series of questions via video. He said the 10-member committee made up of SHSU faculty, alumni and community leaders, will start viewing the responses Aug. 23.

Lewis said he expects the committee will choose three or five finalists for the position and they would be invited to the campus for interviews.

He said he expects the candidates will be selected in September and he hopes a new vice president will be in place by the end of the year.

The following are the top eight candidates for the position:

  • William G. Anlyan of Wilmington, N.C. He currently serves as a partner and senior vice president for Anlyan and Hively Wealth Management. He received a degree from the Duke University's School of Law.

  • Jack Gray, of Commerce. He currently serves as the vice president for marketing and resource development at Texas A&M University-Commerce. He received a master's degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma.

  • Frank Holmes of Arden, N.C. He currently serves as the assistant headmaster for the Advancement Christ School. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Memphis.

  • John Mark Hutchins of Starkville, Miss. He currently serves as the vice president for institutional advancement at Wood College. He has a doctorate in public administration from Mississippi State University.

  • Thomas E. Piazze Jr. of Lafayette Hill, Pa. He currently serves as the director for corporate and foundation relations at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He has a master's degree in western European studies from the Naval Postgraduate School.

  • Herman Smith of Bryan. He currently serves as the superintendent of Bryan ISD. He has a doctorate from Texas A&M University.

  • Ronald Streibich of Lubbock. He currently serves as the vice president for institutional advancement at Texas Tech University. He has a bachelor's degree from Knox College.

  • C.E. Gene Vestal of Denton. He currently serves as the associate vice president of development at the University of North Texas. He has a bachelor's degree from Ouachita Baptist University.

Lewis said he is pleased with the candidates and thinks the committee has some strong individuals to choose from.

He said the committee takes its job seriously, because the vice president position is vital to the university.

"(The position) is a comprehensive position in terms of its scope," Lewis said. "Basically the individual will oversee the marketing development of the university."

The candidate needs to be on the same page with the president, Lewis said.

"It will be important to see how well they blend with the president," he said. "They'll work very closely with the president in terms of being the marketing arm for the university."
