Pianist to Perform Classical Works

Clive Swansbourne

The works performed will be the "Partita No.1" by Bach, Schumann's "Carnaval," and six preludes by Rachmaninoff.

Swansbourne was born and educated in England, studying at the Royal College of Music in London. Later he came to the United States and studied at Yale School of Music with Ward Davenny and Claude Frank, and received his doctorate there. He has toured widely throughout the United States, and has performed to critical acclaim in most of the big cities and almost all the states. He has also performed frequently in Europe (Great Britain, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland) as well as Canada.

His performances have been broadcast on NPR's "Performance Today" and on the BBC in England. He was a major prize-winner at the Maryland International Piano Competition, and in 1989 won the "Concerts Atlantique" International Music Competition.

In recent years he has twice given the complete cycle (in eight recitals) of the 32 Beethoven sonatas, and highly praised accounts of Bach's Goldberg Variations at the Philadelphia Bach Society and Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto at the Gala opening concert of California's Music in the Mountains Festival. He has given master classes and clinics at dozens of colleges and universities from coast to coast.

He made his first recital CD in 1999, comprising music by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms and Rachmaninov. He recently received a Faculty Research Grant to perform the Beethoven Sonata cycle at Sam Houston State University during 2002-2003. He was appointed coordinator of piano studies at Sam Houston State University In 1999.

Professors Selected for International Awards

Gerling will spend two weeks in Spain and Fox will study in Northern Ireland this summer.

The professors will attend international faculty development seminars sponsored by the Council on International Educational Exchange. The seminars last one to two weeks and are designed to encourage faculty members to develop new courses, modify existing one, develop exchanges with other universities, develop or enhance research projects, and recruit international students.

Counseling Center to Host Anxiety Workshop

Among the topics to be covered are relaxation skills and test taking strategies.

Acclaimed Violinist to Perform

His program is entitled "The Unaccompanied Violin Works of J.S. Bach" and includes selections from "Sonata No. 1 in G Minor," "Partita No. 1 in B Minor" and "Partita No. 2 in D Minor."

Fulkerson's performing career has included debuts in New York, London, Paris, Rome and Brussels. He has performed over 30 concerti with orchestras, including world premieres with the Chattanooga Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony.

His debut recording on New World Records was chosen one of the year's best by the "New York Times." His latest recording, featuring "The Complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by J. S. Bach," was selected one of the Best CDs of 2000 by "The New Yorker Magazine."
