Campers Sample Collegiate Environment

Approximately 6500 campers will participate in activities, according to Norma Buxkemper, coordinator of academic scholarships and summer camps.

Among the offerings that are taking place are camps for working with horses, cheerleading, softball, band, football, baseball, pole vault, basketball, orchestra, tennis, journalism, jump rope, choir, piano, and natural history.

Although most of the campers come from Texas, some come from other countries as well. Buxkemper pointed out that the USA Jump Rope Camp brings students from all over the world.

"The majority of the campers will stay on campus, eat in Belvin Cafeteria, and use university facilities while they are here," she said.

Among the facilities which the campers use are the coliseum, health and kinesiology center, intramural and Pritchett Fields, agriculture facility, Bowers Stadium, and rooms in the Fine Arts Building.

"Most of our campus is exposed to these younger students while they attend our camps, and we hope they will like what they see and will want to come back," said Buxkemper.

She has already gotten positive feedback from the person who coordinated a football camp for youngsters last week.

"This was the first time to hold their camp here, and they loved our campus," she said. "The coordinator said they could not have asked for a friendlier athletic staff to work with, and that they are going to come back next year."

Although Buxkemper's office coordinates camp activities, she is quick to point out that it is a cross-campus team effort.

"The responsibility of summer camps is not just in my office," she said. "Every department on this campus makes a summer camp successful."

Enrollment Figures Show Increase

Last year, 5,218 students enrolled for the first summer session.

The largest percentage increase came in the number of beginning freshmen, with an increase of 163.6 percent.

Classes for the first summer session will conclude with finals on June 27. Classes for the second summer session begin on July 2.

Alumni Invited to Bryan Reception

SHSU President James F. Gaertner will be on hand to visit with guests.

The event is hosted by the SHSU Alumni Association together with Bryan co-hosts, including The Bryan/College Station Eagle, Target, Compass Bank and 1st National Bank.

Outdoor Recreation Hosts Summer Activities

The first is entitled "Central Texas Climbing" and will take place June 22 from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $35.

The second activity is "Lake Raven Canoe and Kayak" on July 9 from 5:45 p.m. until 8 p.m., and the cost is $3.

On July 20-21, students are invited to participate in "Galveston Island Fish and Fun." The cost for this activity is $15.

Gaertner Names Advancement Interim

Krystyniak is director of public relations, one of three areas in university advancement at SHSU. Also under the advancement function at SHSU are alumni relations and development.

Krystyniak has two degrees from SHSU and is accredited by the Public Relations Society of America. He has worked in the public relations/communications area at SHSU since 1971.

R. Dean Lewis, dean of the College of Business Administration, is heading the committee searching for a replacement for Bouse, who will become associate vice chancellor for development and alumni relations at the University of Missouri. He will leave SHSU June 30.

Alumni Association Plans Texans Tailgate Party

Tickets are $100 per person and must be purchased by Friday, June 28. The ticket price includes admission to the game, a barbecue meal, and drinks. The Alumni Association has chartered a bus for those interested in traveling with a group.

The tailgate party will begin at 1:15 p.m. at Reliant Stadium - Tailgate Village. Game time is 3:15 p.m.

SamWorks Event in July

SHSU President and Mrs. James Gaertner will be special guests.
