Wrestling Returns to Johnson Coliseum

La Salle Historian to Speak

William C. Foster

Foster, a Texas lawyer who is called "an independent scholar of Texas history," has edited a journal written by one of La Salle's subordinates, one Henri Joutel. Like La Salle, Joutel died in 1687.

"According to the clear daily account of Henri Joutel, La Salle's lieutenant and diarist who kept a record of the distance and direction traveled daily, La Salle was killed about six miles east of the Brazos River crossing near Navasota," according to Foster.

"This is the location projected by Dr. Herbert Bolton about 80 years ago, but some more modern writers suggested that La Salle was killed on the east side of the Trinity River in Houston County. My study demonstrates that Bolton was correct; Navasota is the spot."

Foster will discuss Joutel's journal, which was translated by Johanna S. Warren and which he published in 1998 as "The La Salle Expedition to Texas," at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Walker Education Center.

Joutel was with La Salle when he set off from Matagorda Bay on the Texas coast in a search the Mississippi River. His journal includes compass directions and detailed descriptions.

Foster's appearance is in conjunction with a history class on Early Modern Europe taught by Joan L. Coffey. His presentation is entitled "The La Salle Expeditions to the Mississippi River and to Texas."

Busy Week of Arts and Activities

Beginning Wednesday (March 20) and continuing through March 31, the "Scenes from the Folk Festival" exhibit will be staged at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum historical site's Walker Education Center Gallery. Times are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

On Thursday (March 21) a Guest Artist Brass Quintet featuring Robert Daniel and the National Brass Virtuosity is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

On Thursday and Friday (March 22) the SHSU Opera Workshop under the direction of Dorothy Maddison, will present "The Magic Flute" at 7:30 p.m. both evenings in the New Town Theatre.

On Friday Adam Golka will present a Guest Piano Artist recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

On Saturday (March 23) a demonstration of weaving and spinning will be given from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the front porch of the Woodland Home of the museum grounds.

Also Saturday, the Beethoven Festival for Pianists will take place all day at the Recital Hall. The SHSU Jazz Festival directed by Rod Cannon is also scheduled throughout the day in the University Theatre Center.

Student is Acting Competition Winner

Plachy will receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D. C. to participate in the national finals in late April. He and Trey Huguley will present their scene from "The Invention of Love" and Plachy will perform his monologue from "The Ruling Class."

Other SHSU award winners were Jeremy Sutton and Dave Ervin. Jeremy was second runner-up out of 185 contestants for his work in "Pillow Talk" and "Othello." Ervin received two awards as "Best Partner" in the semi-finals and finals.

The technical staff at host Texas Christian University presented the "Load-in-Load-out Award" to the cast and crew of "Uncle Vanya," which was performed but not selected for the national finals.

Individuals honored for their crew work were Larry Routh, technical director; Shawn Fisher, scenic designer; Crys McDonald, stage manager; and crew heads Kyle Bodiford and Jeremy Sutton.

James R. Miller, chairman of the theatre and dance department, said that SHSU has not participated in the competition for more than 20 years, and that faculty and students appreciate the funding that made it possible to do so this year.

New Database Search Service

Workshops on the new service are scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday (March 19), 10 a.m. Wednesday (March 20), and 1 p.m. Thursday (March 21). Those who are interested in the service but cannot attend a scheduled workshop should contact Jess Nevins, reference librarian, at 936.294.3587.

With the new service, faculty and students can define searches that will automatically run within a database of the individual's choice. The results of the searches are e-mailed to the person at specified intervals.

Databases now using Alert Service are Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, America History and Life, Historical Abstracts, and Science Direct.
