Visiting Scholar to Lecture on Mafia

Paoli's lecture is hosted by the College of Criminal Justice in collaboration with the Office of International Programs.

Paoli is a senior research fellow in the Department of Criminology of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg, Germany.

She obtained the Ph.D. in political and social sciences at the European University Institute in Firenze with her thesis on the Italian mafia.

Paoli has been a consultant to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, the Direzione Investigativa Antimafia, the UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention in Vienna, and the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute in Rome.

During her two-week stay, Paoli will be a guest lecturer in several criminal justice and sociology classes.

Recreational Sports Prepares for Poker Walk 2

The Poker Walk was originally scheduled for Feb. 27, but was postponed because of bad weather.

Recreational Sports hosted the first Poker Walk in the fall semester. The activity was well attended by not only students, but faculty and staff as well.

SHSU departments can pre-register as a team to enter two contests. A traveling trophy will be awarded to the department that displays the most energy, spirit and enthusiasm in the "High Roller Challenge," and the "Maverick Award" will be awarded to the best single hand from all department entries. The deadline for pre-registration is Tuesday, March 26, at 3 p.m.

Radio-TV Professor Pens Cover Story for Magazine

MacArthur is an avid snowboarder who lived in Vermont while teaching at Lyndon State College.

He is also editor and publisher of the "Wrestling Perspective" newsletter and a contributing writer for "Down Beat," "Cadence," "The Jazz Report," and "Event" magazine.

English Department Hosts Colloquium

Lee Courtney will speak on "Mobyphobia at SHSU: Literature Classes and Reading Aversion." Paul Child will speak on "'I'm Not Kidding': Teaching Satire." Shane Graham will speak on "Teaching Outside the Canon: A Report from Year One."

These speakers come from all three professional ranks and reflect a variety of both teaching disciplines and experiences.

A reception for Sam Houston faculty will follow in the English Department Lounge in the Evans Building.

Early Childhood Expert to Present Workshops

"Intersecting Interests: Resources and Strategies to Support the Development of All Children in Community Settings" is the title of the first workshop, which will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The second workshop, "Working with Students with Disabilities: A Workshop for University Faculty," will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Catlett co-directs the Walking the Walk, New Scripts, and Natural Allies projects at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina. She previously directed two federally funded early intervention personnel projects at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA's Infant Project and Building Blocks).

A trained speech-language pathologist, Catlett has focused on young children and their families for the last 20 years.

She is a frequent presenter at workshops and institutes on methods and materials for improving the quality of early childhood intervention, inter-professional teamwork, and family-centered practices.

The workshops at SHSU are sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi, the Sam Houston Association for the Education of Young Children, and the Student Council for Exceptional Children. The workshops are underwritten by a grant from the Frank Leathers Development Fund.
