Endowment Honors Former Philosophy Professor

Thomas Satre

Satre taught at SHSU from 1972 until his retirement in 1997. He died at his home in Richmond Hill, Georgia on June 2, 2000.

"Tom's main focus was always on the classroom," said Frank Fair, coordinator the philosophy program.

"He established high standards of clarity and rigor in his classroom presentations, and he worked hard to help students explore the sometimes bewildering variety of philosophical views," Fair said.

Satre also pursued a number of active research projects. His last publication, which he co-authored with his wife, Kathy Bennett, and which appeared posthumously in the June 2000 issue of "The Prison Journal," was an in-depth look at the ethics of the death penalty in the form of a review of the movie "The Green Mile."

In addition to his scholarly involvement, Satre was an active Boy Scout leader, an advocate of civil liberties, and a supporter of the arts, especially music and photography.

Contributions to the endowment can be made payable to the SHSU Thomas W. Satre Scholarship Fund, and mailed to the Office of University Advancement, Box 2537, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX 77341-2537.

Bearkats in Touch

Local alumni and friends are invited to gather informally at Zach's the first Tuesday of each month to visit and become better acquainted with each other. Graduating seniors are also invited to drop by and become familiar with the Alumni Association and benefits of membership.

SHSU Co-hosts Writing Conference

The conference is co-sponsored by Sam Houston State, University of Houston-Downtown, New Mexico State and Rice University.

Others from SHSU who will participate in the conference include: Paullet Golden, Dawn Caplinger, Rebecca Novotny, Diane Dowdey, Kandi Tayebi, Melissa Morphew, Carol Ferguson Nardone and Christie Fox.

Sammy Awards

The event is held each year to honor student organizations, student leaders, and advisers for the time and talent they invest in the co-curricular development of Sam Houston students.

The awards include 18 individual and organizational awards which require nominations from members of the university community at-large, and "Sammys," which will be presented to approximately ten graduating students and five faculty/staff members for outstanding contributions and service to the university "above and beyond the call of duty."

Nomination forms are available in the office of the Department of Student Activities, Wilson 117.

Chorale to Tour

On Monday, the group will perform at Cypress Creek High School, Klein High School and Montgomery College. Tuesday, performances will be held at Clear Creek High School and Galveston Ball High School. On Wednesday, the group will be at Deer Park High School and South Houston High School.

The program includes selections by classical composers Orlando Gibbons, Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy and Johannes Brahms, as well as by 20th century composers Ken Neufeld and Jerome Kern, and an arrangement by Jackson Berkey of the spiritual "Balm in Gilead."

Presidential Reception

James Gaertner

The reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Conroe Chamber of Commerce on West Davis Street.

This is the first of several receptions the Alumni Association is hosting throughout the state to provide an opportunity for former Bearkats and current friends to visit with President Gaertner in person and hear about his plans for Sam Houston State University.

Symphony Performance at Woodlands Pavilion

The Fine Arts Education Series is designed to stimulate interest in fourth grade students to take band or orchestra when they get to fifth grade, which is the first time students are allowed to participate in band and orchestra programs.

Approximately 4,000 Conroe ISD students will attend the free performance, subsidized by the Conroe Service League and Partners, The Center's volunteer organization. Through numerous educational and community outreach programs, The Center is a catalyst for attracting new audiences to the performing arts and building strong ties between the arts and educational institutions.

The SHSU Symphony will perform popular pieces by Howard Hanson, Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov, Benjamin Britten and John Williams.

Orientation Team Takes Top Honors

The three, who are Team Leaders for new student orientation, presented a program on diversity entitled "The Wall." Conference delegates selected the program as the best presentation at the conference, earning designation as a NODA "Regional Showcase." The students have been invited to present the program at NODA's annual international conference which will be held in Baltimore Nov. 7-10, 2002.

"This is a tremendous honor for our students," said Mary Ellen Sims, assistant dean of student life and coordinator of new student orientation.

"They represented SHSU well at the regional conference, and they will do so again at the international level," said Sims. "In addition, this is a tremendous learning opportunity for them. They will gain many ideas and insights that can be utilized to strengthen our own program."

New Student Orientation utilized 26-28 student leaders who serve as peer advisers to incoming freshman and transfer students each summer. Team leaders are selected from veteran orientation leaders to assist in the planning and coordination of the program.

New Human Resource Student Organization

The SHSU Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management received its official charter at a reception held Feb. 27 in the Bearkat Lounge of the Bowers Stadium Field House.

The organization received the charter from Roger Walter, a representative of the Houston Human Resource Management Association.

Newly installed officers are (from left) Maggie Nicholson, Chris Rumohr, Jacque Manna and Alisha Ramirez.

"We hope to be a bridge for students to get out into the real world," said Manna.

In addition to providing avenues for networking, members of the organization plan to attend workshops and luncheons and seek internships.

Clarinet Studio Recital

The recital, directed by Patricia Card, will be held in the Recital Hall on campus.

The program includes "Trio Quebecois" by Lucio Agostini, "Concerto" by Georg Telemann, "Trois Divertissements" by Henri Tomasi, and "French Suite" by Yvonne Desportes.

Featured performers include Angela Carbonell, Emily Adams, Blaise Konkel, Arlie Stamm, Geri Swanzy, Amy Dykes and Shauna Disler.

Also, Daniel Stover, Brian Schellberg, Dmitry Perevertailenko, Chris Gonzales, MaRee Clayton, Karen Coleman, Noei Valenzuela and Kim Cheatham.
