History Books Reflect Scholarly Achievements

"Bathsheba's Breast: Women, Cancer and History" by James S. Olson, will be released this summer by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

Joan Coffey's book, "Leon Harmel and Social Catholic Teaching During the Third Republic," will be published next year by the University of Notre Dame Press.

The University Press of Kansas has agreed to publish Robert Bruce's book, "A Fraternity of Arms: America's Military Relationship with France During the First World War."

The University of Texas Press will publish Caroline Crimm's book, "De Leon: A Tejano Family History."

All four books have been refereed at an international level.

"For a department of our size, at a university with our mission," said Olson, chair of the SHSU history department, "this is an extraordinary achievement---something in which the university and the community can take great pride."

Bouse Elected to Board

He will serve as director for Texas. Directors for states are elected at each state caucus during the district's annual meeting.

CASE District IV is comprised of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mexico. Membership in CASE is by institution and organizations, with member representatives at each institution.

Of the 1700 professional member representatives from the five states and Mexico, Texas has over 1000. There are 244 member institutions and associates in CASE District IV, 111 of which are located in Texas.

CASE helps its members build stronger relationships with their alumni and donors, raise funds for campus projects, produce recruitment materials, market their institutions to prospective students, diversify the profession, and foster public support of education.

CASE also offers a variety of advancement products and services, provides standards and an ethical framework for the profession, and works with other organizations to respond to public issues of concern, while promoting the importance of education worldwide.

Babcock Joins President's Office

She will be working directly with Paula Vernick, assistant to the president for special projects, who joined the university as a consultant in October 2001, and became a full-time employee in March.

"Paula and Maggie are bringing a lot of energy to Sam Houston State University," said Gaertner. "Together, they will be working on the many new initiatives related to our focus on increasing the university's visibility."

"We've already begun projects with many departments on campus as well as businesses and organizations in our community to accomplish our goals," said Vernick.

"In addition to her knowledge of the Huntsville community, Maggie was very actively involved in campus and student life while at Sam Houston State University. She has a lot of friends at SHSU and has hit the ground running."

Some of the projects they are working on include the Alumni Association's Presidential Receptions being hosted all over Texas; the President's Speaker Series; the President's Circle; public relations and advertising; the Phone Service Initiative; University/Community Council, which has resulted in projects with the community that include the Bearkat Bucks "All in One" card program, partnering on the new Huntsville Activities Guide, and partnering with the city on a signage and way finding initiative.

'Rock Solid Adventure Week'

The event is sponsored by the SHSU Office of Continuing Education, Team Synergy, Rock Solid Character, and Huntsville State Park.

The concept is a week long summer day camp that incorporates special character lessons with fun outdoor activities such as ropes/challenge courses, rock climbing, archery, orienteering, hiking, environmental studies and crafts, and swimming.

Dates for the camp are June 10-14 for first through third grade; June 17-21 for fourth through sixth grade; June 24-28 for seventh and eighth grade; July 8-12 for first through fourth grade; and July 15-19 for fifth through eighth grade.

The program will be held at the Team Synergy's Ropes/Challenge Course and Huntsville State Park. The day's activities will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and students may be dropped off 30 minutes prior to the starting time and picked up 30 minutes after the ending time.
