History/Museum to Host Veterans Day Programs

Robert Bruce of the history department and Dennis Showalter of Colorado College will give presentations to address the meaning of Veterans Day, the value of public service, and the importance of the study of military history.

The commemorations begin at 9 a.m. with an address by Bruce. He is the author of books and articles on World War I and the Civil War. He will speak at the Gillaspie Memorial Marker located across the street from the Sam Houston gravesite in Oakwood Cemetery.

At 7 p.m. Showalter will speak on "Military History, Public Service, and the Historical Profession" at the Walker Education Center at the museum.

Showalter is a professor of history, the past president of the Society for Military History, and the author of numerous books and articles on the first and second World Wars, the Cold War, and the German army. His talk will be followed by a reception in the Walker Education Center atrium.

"We hope that these events will offer the community a chance to stop briefly in their day to remember the men and women who have lost their lives defending American freedom as well as those who continue to fight today," said event coordinator Susannah Bruce.

"Also, we want the university and the Huntsville community to know about the history department's new emphasis on military history and to strengthen the ties between the university, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, and area veterans," added Bruce.

"Sam Houston, whose memory we enshrine, served as a U. S. Army officer, fought and was wounded at Horseshoe Bend during the War of 1812, and commanded the forces of the Texas Revolution at San Jacinto," said Pat Nolan, director of the museum. "We are honored to join with the history department to commemorate all of our nation's veterans in this way."

Guest Pianist to Perform

The program will include pieces by Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy and Liszt. Lee will also introduce to Texas a piece by French composer Allain Gaussin.

Lee is an assistant professor and active performer and lecturer in the Midwest. She has performed in invitational recitals in Oklahoma and in guest recitals in Kansas, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Michigan.

She has also appeared in concerto performances with the Hays Symphony Orchestra, Salina Symphony Orchestra and Fort Hays Wind Ensemble, as well as the Eastman School of Music Student Orchestra, Seoul National University Symphony Orchestra and the Korean Symphony Orchestra.

Sondheim/Furth Comedy Coming Up

Showtimes are at 8 p.m. with an addition 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Nov. 23. The performance will be held in the Showcase Theatre in the University Theatre Center.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for senior citizens or SHSU students with an I.D. The play includes adult language and situations.

Graduate Art Work to be on Display

A closing reception will be held in the gallery on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.

'Get Your Bowl On'

The date was originally announced as Nov. 19, but the event is taking place one week earlier.

Entertainer to Perform at Comicview

Carmean's mix of guitar rock and college-centered comedy has earned him accolades from campuses across the nation. He was nominated Comedian of the Year and Entertainer of the Year by Campus Activities Magazine.

He began his comedy career during his undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia and paid his way through college by performing at locals clubs and bars.

Scholarship Offered for Army Dependents

The MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund is for students who study at an undergraduate, technical or vocational institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education and approved for Title IV funds.

Scholarships are awarded based primarily on financial need, secondarily on academic achievements and individual accomplishments.

In academic year 2002-2003, of the 2,114 individuals with complete applications, 93 percent received scholarship funds. The awards amounted to $2,539,200.

Scholarship applications for the upcoming academic year for children of Army soldiers (active, retired or deceased) are available on request from the Army Emergency Relief headquarters, 200 Stovall Street, Alexandria, Va. 22332-0600 from Nov. 3, 2002 to Feb. 21, 2003.

The application may also be printed from the Army Emergency Relief web page from Nov. 3, 2002 through March 3, 2003, and applications may be submitted online.

Considering Graduate School?

The program will be held in the Center, located in room 115 of the Newton Gresham Library on campus.

Topics will include information on the applications process, reference letter, and financial aid.
