SHSU Update for Week of Nov. 17

'Company' Begins This Week

The Sam Houston State University Department of Theatre and Dance presents "Company," a musical comedy by Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and George Furth (book).

Showtimes are Tuesday, Nov. 19, through Saturday, Nov. 23. The performance will be in the Showcase Theatre in the SHSU University Theatre Center.

Robert, known to his friends as Bobby, is a bachelor celebrating his 35th birthday. It seems like everyone around him is either married or engaged. His married friends want Bobby to follow their lead, but he is content simply dating countless women and waiting until the right one comes along.

As Bobby catches glimpses of his friends' married lives, he begins to question the idea of marriage. Filled with music and laughs, "Company" takes a closer look at relationships and the value of sharing life with someone else.

Bobby is played by SHSU senior musical theatre major Tye Blue. The rest of the cast includes musical theatre and theatre majors Paul Copenhaver, Andrea Haring, Matt Tompkins, Samantha Sutton, Matt Daugherty, Jennifer Gilbert, Matt Redden, Heather Scheffel, Jamey Rabold, Melissa Pritchett, Stephanie Weser, Holland Vavra, Onyie Nwachukwu, April Hoyt, Eric Mota, Kathleen Seiley, Alexis Shannon, Todd Wingler and Julie Linnard.

SHSU theatre and dance faculty member Jonathan Charles is the director and choreographer and Patrick Pearson is the musical director.

Theatre majors Grant Gonsoulin and Julie Linnard are stage manager and assistant director, respectively. The conductor for the show is music education major Skip McLinden.

SHSU theatre faculty member Kristina Hanssen is costume designer. Other designers are theatre major Kevin Kyle (set) and Kyle Bodiford (lights).

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for senior citizens or SHSU students with an ID. The play includes adult language and situations.

For more information, contact the University Theatre Center at 936.294.1330.

Violin/Viola Master Class to Perform

The SHSU School of Music Violin/Viola Master Class will perform for spectators Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

Eugene Gratovich, professor of violin at the University of Texas, will be on hand to witness the performance and give feedback to the students in front of the audience.

Since 1976, Gratovich has performed widely in the U.S., Europe, and South America and has soloed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony.

Over the years Gratovich has served as the director of graduate violin studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music and concertmaster of the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra. He records frequently and has been internationally acclaimed for his lecture and demonstrations.

The master class is part of the Robertson and Sons Violins Inc. Master Teacher Master Class Series. Students Joshua Smith, Carlos Lara, Alia Khader and Sohui Yi will be featured.

Motivational Speaker to Offer Tips for Success

Marlon Smith, author of "What's Up" will be the featured presenter in the Society of Success and Leadership speaker series on Nov. 19 at 5:45 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center auditorium.

His presentation is entitled "Success by Choice," and he will offer suggestions on how to change hopes and dreams into reality.

Smith has developed a powerful curriculum consisting of motivational workbooks, instructional videotapes and lesson plans for teachers, parents and mentors, and he will share his techniques with students in this interactive program.

Program Council to Host Pool Party/Food Drive

The Lowman Student Center Program Council will sponsor a "Pool Party in November" from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the LSC Kat Klub.

The event will include free pool table access for the first 150 students who arrive with three canned goods. The canned goods will be donated to a local charitable organization.

"The pool party is a community service event designed to collect food items for the needy at Thanksgiving," said programming chair Laura Springel.

Program Council will provide free pizza, snacks and drinks for participants. The Kat Klub also offers video games and ping-pong tables for those looking for other forms of entertainment.

Program Council will provide free game tokens so that games may be played at no charge to the students. For more information about the Pool Party or any other Program Council event, call 936.294.1763.

Recreational Sports to Host 'Circuit Jam'

The SHSU Department of Recreational Sports will host "Circuit Jam" Nov. 19 between 5:30 and 8 p.m.

Guests are invited to drop in during this time for a free 30-minute circuit training workout, refreshments and a chance to win door prizes while exercising.

"Circuit Jam" is for every skill level from beginning to advanced. The "Circuit Jam" staff will take participants through the various exercises.

The event is limited to the first 60 participants, and the Health and Kinesiology weight room will be closed for regular use from 5:15 to 7:45 p.m. for the activity.
