Orchestra Performance to Feature Clarinetist

The performance will feature the famous "Fanfare fur die Weiner Philharmoniker" which Richard Strauss wrote for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra brass and percussion sections, conducted by Professor of Music and Director of Bands Matthew McInturf.

The orchestra will also play Tchaikovsky's "Capriccio Italien," a work featuring brilliant orchestral effects with quotes from Neapolitan street songs and tarantellas performed at challenging tempos. Tchaikovsky was inspired to write this piece by the songs he heard while visiting Rome and Florence in the 19th century.

Additionally, clarinet professor Patricia Card will perform Mozart's well-known "Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra." Music from this work can be heard in a number of movie sound tracks such as "Amadeus," "Out of Africa," and "Green Card."

Card previously taught at Oklahoma City University and was principal clarinet in the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra. She was a finalist in the 1989 International Clarinet Association Competition (Minneapolis-St. Paul) and a finalist in the 1991 National Young Artists Competition (Midland-Odessa). In 1995, she received the Outstanding Graduate Student in Instrumental Studies award at the University of North Texas.

She is included in the prestigious Who's Who Among America's Teachers and is a member of The International Clarinet Association and Pi Kappa Lambda. Card has been a featured soloist at the Midwest National Convention and Texas Music Educators Association convention and presented clinics at Oklahoma Music Educators Association convention and Texas Bandmasters Association convention.

Pruitt Promoted to Assistant Vice President

With the position she will assume responsibility for supervising the Bearkitten Academy Childcare Center, Career Services, Counseling and ADA Services, and Health Services.

She held an interim position of executive director of support services and director of career services for over a year.

"It was evident that Dr. Pruitt's wealth of knowledge in the areas she supervised positioned her as the sole person for the promotion," said Thelma J. Douglass, vice president for student services.

"She has been the catalyst in developing new programs and improving current programs in various departments," added Douglass. "We welcome her refreshing ideas and expertise in the field."

Hill to Speak at A&M

The title of her lecture is "Exploring J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings: An Encounter with the Dangers of Light and Joy."

Hill is a Tolkien and Lewis scholar, and has been asked to present another lecture to interested A&M faculty the following day. Her title for Friday's lecture is "J. R. R. Tolkien's Mythic Vision."

Pianist to Premiere Piece by French Composer

The program will include pieces by Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy and Liszt. Lee will also introduce to Texas a piece by French composer Allain Gaussin.

She is an assistant professor and active performer and lecturer in the Midwest. She has performed in invitational recitals in Oklahoma and in guest recitals in Kansas, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Michigan.

She has also appeared in concerto performances with the Hays Symphony Orchestra, Salina Symphony Orchestra and Fort Hays Wind Ensemble, as well as the Eastman School of Music Student Orchestra, Seoul National University Symphony Orchestra and the Korean Symphony Orchestra.

Program Council to Present Free Lecture

The lecture, "Let's Talk About Sex," is free to university students and will cover information on issues regarding sexually transmitted diseases, HIV testing, and safe sex.
