SHSU Update for Week of Oct. 13

Asian Studies Conference

Tracy Steele, associate professor of history at SHSU, serves as president of the organization and is the program chair of the meeting. She will also be the moderator for a session on economics.

The meeting will include paper sessions and panel discussions on a number of issues including education, culture, gender studies, Chinese prison camps, religion, transitions in Asia, and Asian conflicts and crises.

Frank Fair, professor of philosophy at SHSU, will serve as moderator for a session on Asian issues and will present a paper entitled "Beyond Karma Cola: Changes in presenting the philosophy of religion after demographic shifts and sea-change in philosophical ideology."

David Ludden, professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania and president of the Association for Asian Studies, will deliver the keynote address on "Maps in the Mind and the Mobility of Asia."

In conjunction with the meeting, a workshop for K-12 teachers will be held in the Smith-Hutson Building all day Saturday. "Windows on Asia: A Workshop on Infusing Asia into Class Curriculum" will provide content and curriculum for educators to introduce into their lessons and discussion pertaining to Asian history, culture, politics and current events. The workshop offers teachers lesson plans, readings, and presentations on China, Vietnam, and a variety of Asian topics.

James Olson, distinguished professor of history at SHSU, who will discuss "Parochial Vision: The United States and Vietnam," is among the workshop presenters.

The programs associated with the conference meeting are co-hosted by the South West Conference on Asian Studies, Association for Asian Studies, Asia Society Texas, the World Affairs Council, and the Sam Houston State University Department of History.

Swansbourne and Sonatas

The recital will take place at the Killinger Auditorium inside the Beto Criminal Justice Center.

The main feature of the program will be the immense �Hammerklavier� sonata, which Beethoven himself considered the greatest of the 32. Swansbourne said it took him eight years of on-and-off study of the work before he picked up enough courage to perform it.

It has since become a staple of his repertoire. To offset the magnitude of this work, the first half of the program will include two earlier sonatas, full of wit and high spirits.

Swansbourne will provide spoken introductions to the performances.

Houston Ballet Youth Dancers

The dancers are students enrolled in the academy who are in the Level 8 Professional program. They perform at venues throughout the Houston area to expose local students to classical and contemporary ballet. Also, Houston Ballet Youth Dancers touring provides additional performance experience for students in Houston Ballet Academy.

5K Raven Run

The SHSU Recreational Sports Department is sponsoring the event as part of SHSU homecoming activities. The cost is $5 per person for those who register by Oct. 24 at 5 p.m., and $7 per person on race day. The completed registration form and check, cash or money order can be taken to the Recreational Sports Office, Health and Kinesiology Center room 104.

Everyone who pre-registers will receive a Raven Run shirt. Race day registration will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. only.

The race will begin and end in the faculty/staff parking lot east of the Health and Kinesiology Center.

The course is a 5K (3.2 miles) hilly, road course that will pass Bowers Stadium and wind through the area surrounding the SHSU campus. Maps are available in the Recreational Sports Office.

There is also a non-competitive walking course that is approximately one mile that will go behind Bowers Stadium.

Awards will be given to the top male and female runners in the following categories: SHSU student, SHSU faculty/staff, SHSU student organization, and SHSU alumni.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Performances for "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" will be held Oct. 18, 25, and Halloween night, beginning at 11 p.m. in the dance theatre in Academic Building 3.

The performance features the showing of the movie with as much live activity in front of the screen as can be arranged.

Admission is free and "prop bags" are available at the door for $5.

The show is intended for mature audiences.

'Together We Care'

Building representatives will distribute forms allowing payroll deductions or one-time contributions to a wide variety of area, state, national and international charities.

Contribution forms are also available from the SHSU State Employee Charitable Campaign co-chairs, Karon Murff (ext. 4-1075) or Emmette Jackson (ext. 4-1194). Participation in the campaign is strictly voluntary.
