SHSU Update for Week of Oct. 20

Homecoming Week

A Kickoff Rally will be the first of the scheduled activities and will take place on Monday at 11:45 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall. The dance team, cheerleaders and Bearkat Marching Band will be on hand as the homecoming king and queen candidates are introduced.

Comedian Elvira Kurt will entertain students at 8 o'clock in the LSC Theater that evening.

An Organizations Fair is scheduled on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the LSC Mall. Various campus organizations will have table and will visit with potential members.

Later on Tuesday, at 5:45 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Auditorium, the SHSU Society of Success and Leadership will present John Crudele and his message, "Living as a Leader: Playing on a Higher Plane."

The Sam Jam Carnival will be held on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Johnson Coliseum parking lot. The carnival will feature food, drinks, giveaways, along with the M4 simulator and other inflatables.

Thursday evening, the Department of Student Activities will host Movie at the Old Downtown Theater. "Signs," starring Mel Gibson, will begin at 8 p.m.

The classes of 1951 and 1952 will be honored at the Golden Circle Luncheon at 11 a.m. in the LSC Ballroom on Friday.

At 2 p.m. the Alumni Garden, located between the Lowman Student Center and the Alumni Fountain, will be dedicated.

The Dintinguished Alumni Gala Reception will begin at 6 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom and will be followed by a dinner at 7 p.m. Four Sam Houston State graduates, including Harry Bohan of Huntsville, and Huntsville native David Rex, are among those who will be recognized and honored that evening.

The Recreational Sports Department will start Saturday's events with the annual 5K Raven Run. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the faculty/staff parking lot east of the Health and Kinesiology Center.

Also at 9 a.m. an alumni coffee will be held in Austin Hall.

A homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. at 20th Street and Sam Houston Ave.

The Department of Agricultural Sciences will host a reception and coffee in room 325 of the Thomason Building at 10 a.m.

The Lettermen Association Hall of Honor Luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the LSC Ballroom.

At noon a tailgate party will be held at Bowers Stadium, featuring food, festivities, and a David James concert sponsored by First National Bank of Huntsville.

The College of Business Administration will host a mixer from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Lettermen's Lounge of the Bearkat Field House.

The Bearkat football team will take on McNeese State at Bowers Stadium, and the Bearkat volleyball team will battle Northwestern State in Johnson Coliseum. Both events will begin at 2 p.m.

Visiting Scholar to Discuss Sri Lankans

Hasbullah's topic, "Would and When Refugees Go Home? The Perception of Sri Lankans in the USA and Canada," will be presented from 11 a.m. until noon in the Lowman Student Center Theater (room 112).

Hasbullah is a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia and a scholar from the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Racquetball Demo Nite

The instructors, Kyle Smith, state and national champion, and John Bryant, state champion, will offer instruction plus playing anyone who desires to learn more about their personal skill level.

In concert with the demo "shoot out" tournaments will be organized for men and women wishing to compete for Ektalon prizes. A speed gun and automatic server will also be available for participants to help determine and improve velocity and skill.
