SHSU Update for Week of Oct. 6

Opening Night Performance

The Opening Night Performance of the SHSU Symphony Orchestra and SHSU Chorale will take place Saturday evening (Oct. 12) at 7:30 at First Baptist Church.

Carol Smith is the conductor of the orchestra and Allen Hightower is conductor of the chorale. Violinist Andrew Wilson will be featured during the performance.

The program includes "Liberty Fanfare" by John Williams; "Sing Ye to the Lord" from Israel in Egypt by George Frideric Handel; "Romance in F Major," Opus 50, for violin and orchestra by Ludwig van Beethoven; and "Zigeunerwieisen," Opus 20, by Pablo de Sarasate.

After an intermission, the program will conclude with "Capriccio Espagnol," Opus 34, a five movement piece by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Sale-A-Thon Broadcast

The 23rd Annual United Way Sale-A-Thon, sponsored by the SHSU radio-television department, will be held Tuesday through Thursday.

The Sale-A-Thon will be broadcast from 7 to 10 p.m. live on Cable 7 and will be simulcast on KSHU radio at 90.5 FM.

Approximately 400 items worth over $25,000 will be available, including autographed sports memorabilia, dining, entertainment, jewelry, t-shirts, CDs, books, household items, and haircuts. A complete list will be in the Huntsville Item on Oct. 6 and the Houstonian on Oct. 8.

All proceeds will go to the United Way of Walker County.

Douglass Attends Fulbright Celebration

Thelma Douglass, vice president for students services at SHSU, attended the 50th anniversary celebration of the German and Japanese Fulbright Programs recently in San Antonio.

Douglass received a Fulbright scholarship in March and traveled to Germany, where she helped open the door for future Fulbright recipients to attend Sam Houston State.

"It was exciting to be selected to attend the 50th anniversary of the German and Japanese Fulbright Scholar Reception," said Douglass. "A select group of approximately 200 Fulbright recipients from Germany and Japan were invited.

"I had the opportunity to meet with several dignitaries, which included Dr. Georg Schutte, executive director of the German Fulbright Kommission; Samuel M Shepherd of the Japan-United States Educational Commission; and Mary E. Kirk, executive director of the Institute of International Education," she said.

"All dignitaries I met inquired about the students from Germany and Japan attending Sam Houston State University. This was a rewarding experience," Douglass added.

The Fulbright Program, the United States' top international educational exchange program, has given countless students from all over the world a chance to travel to foreign countries to learn.

Leadership Series Continues

The Department of Students Activities will present guest speaker John Crudele, who will discuss "Living as a Leader: Playing on a Higher Plane," Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Auditorium.

The lecture is part of the Department of Student Activities' "The Society of Success and Leadership Speaker Series."

During the past 18 years, Crudele has delivered over 3,700 programs to more than a million students and faculty. He has hosted his own national radio talk show and makes guest appearances on television. He is known for addressing sensitive issues regarding values, choices, and courage with compassion and conviction.

The seminar is free and open to the public. For more information contact the Department of Student Activities at 936.294.3861.
