Artist Uses Unique Pieces in Show | |||
She will be at Sam Houston State University to discuss her works of art, which are currently on display in the gallery through Dec. 6. The public is invited to attend the reception. Smith's creative collection and arrangement of boxes is the highlight of the art show. The items inside each box reflect different aspects of life. "I obsessively collect and arrange bits and pieces of objects and text into three-dimensional assemblages," said Smith. "In these pieces, I explore issues such as attachment, detachment, acceptance, control, humor, hope, memory, spirituality, and the busyness of life." Among the items Smith uses in her work are game pieces, playing cards, dice, seeds, keys, buttons, eating utensils, tools, rulers, threads, rocks, seashells and fossils. She says that the box is a metaphor for boundaries. Smith studied art therapy at Southwestern University in Santa Fe. She has bachelor of arts degrees in art and psychology from the University of Texas-Permian Basin. Her art has been featured recently in one-person shows at Coker College in South Carolina, and in several locations in the Midland-Odessa area. She has participated in numerous group shows in the Midland area and her work has been on display at Blackthorn Gallery in England. Smith has permanent collections on display at the University of Texas-Permian Basin, the Ellen Noel Art Museum, and in the possession of private individuals. The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is located in Art Building F in the SHSU art complex at 1028 21st Street on the southwest corner of the SHSU campus. The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 12-5 p.m.
