Special Cards Being Prepared
at SHSU for New York City Police

Almost a year has passed since that infamous morning, but people around the world, and at Sam Houston State University, want police officers in the Big Apple to know they aren't forgotten.

In an effort to show appreciation, members of the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT) are preparing special cards commemorating the one-year anniversary of the attacks that will be sent to the thousands of uniform officers in New York.

David Webb, assistant director of LEMIT, said interested members of the public should come by the Blackwood LEMIT Center at 1640 Bobby K. Marks Dr. and sign a card and/or donate as many business cards as possible to be inserted in the cards.

According to Webb, approximately 2,000 cards have been made and signed by participants of the LEMIT training programs, but another 23,000 are needed.

"Our goal is to put a card in the hands of each uniform police officer in New York City," he said. We've been in touch regularly with the New York City Police Department and we believe 25,000 cards would get us there."

Webb said a Texas police officer came up with the idea and presented it to Rita Watkins, director of LEMIT.

There is a table set up in the Blackwood Center on the main floor for people to come by and sign and donate cards. The deadline is Sept. 1, but the sooner the better, according to Webb.

"It's just a little thank you from the state of Texas," he said. "We want to do this to let them know, 'hey, we're behind you.' "
