World Class String Educators to Initiate Series

Their appearance is the first in the 2002-03 Robertson and Sons Violins, Inc. Master Teacher Master Class Series at the university.

The workshop begins at 9 a.m. and includes three levels of instruction, an all-state booklet, a "How to Audition" session, and a session for parents on "How to Select and Purchase an Instrument."

Music faculty member Andrew Wilson will perform in concert with violinist Almita Vamos and the SHSU Chamber Orchestra conducted by Carol Smith. The performance will be at 5:30 p.m. in the SHSU Recital Hall, and admission is free.

The Vamoses served on the faculty of Oberlin Conservatory from 1992 to 2001. They have taught at Northwestern University for the past year.

Almita has performed nationally and internationally with orchestras and as a member of the Lydian String Trio. Roland, a violist and violinist, has performed as a full-time member of the Houston Symphony, Denver Symphony, and Radio City Music Hall Orchestras and was a member of the Antioch String Quartet, the Columbus Symphony String Quartet, the Lydian Trio, and the Contemporary String Quartet.

The couple has become widely known for producing students who win international competitions, and Almita has been recognized six times for excellence in teaching.

In the most recent issue of the American String Teacher magazine, their work was called "a tireless dedication to their students with a sense of sincere interest in the well-being and development of the student."

They have recorded for the Coronet and Rizzoli labels and are co-founders of the Weathersfield Music Festival in Vermont.

Barrum Invited to FBI Citizens' Academy

The class is limited to 25 participants from the business, educational, medical, and various ethnic communities served by the regional FBI office.

The FBI Citizens' Academy was implemented in Houston in the fall of 2000. Its mission is to provide education and awareness of FBI operations and jurisdictions and to build relationships with community leaders.

FBI instructors give presentations on various investigative programs including counterterrorism, violent crime, organized crime, drugs, and white collar crime.

Barrum teaches classes in the College of Criminal Justice on understanding human behavior and the social dilemma of alcohol. He also supervises the criminal justice undergraduate internship program at SHSU.

Research Exhibition Planned

Thirty-eight undergraduate students from across the university, who have been involved in research projects and creative activities during the past year, will display the results of their efforts as posters, videos and various examples of artwork.

"EUReCA is the campus-wide formal recognition of the products of these undergraduate students," said Mary Plishker, faculty organizer of the event.

The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and all faculty, students and staff are invited.

Study Skills Workshops Offered

The program is offered in a series of six sessions dealing with procrastination, time management, reading textbooks, test taking strategies, and stress management.

"Over 20 groups are being offered at different times during the week so that we can accommodate even the busiest student," said Bernice Strauss, director of academic support programs.

Business Graduate Student Wins Awards

The American Production and Inventory Control Society Educational and Research Foundation, Inc. sponsors the competition.

Melton's paper, "Quality Management: From Deming and Juran to Retail Management," won first place and $250 at the local chapter level and first place and another $250 at the region level.

He competed against students in the Greater Houston area at the chapter level, and graduate students from universities in a seven state area at the region level.

The paper is currently at the international level of the competition where Melton is competing against graduate students from all over the world.

His paper resulted from research conducted as part of a graduate course in quality assurance management taught by Vic Sower, professor of management in SHSU's College of Business Administration.

Sam Houston students have a record of excellence in the competition. Since 1993, SHSU business graduate students have won first place in the chapter level competition seven times; second place eight times; and third place twice.

In addition, SHSU student papers have claimed first place twice; second place three times; and third place three times in the region level competition.

At the national level competition an SHSU student has placed second one time.

Biological Sciences Department Offers Seminars

Rocky Ward, director of the Conservation Genetics Laboratory, Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will be the first speaker.

His topic is "Conservation Genetics of Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus): Implication for the Management of a Highly Migratory Species."

The department will feature guest speakers each Thursday at 4 o'clock in room 220. The seminars are open to the public and there is no charge for admission.

Career Services Announces Upcoming Events

The office will host Career Expo on Sept. 18 at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The job fair is open to all students.

A kick off for the expo will be held in the Lowman Student Center Mall on Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be drawings from over 80 businesses for students to win gifts. Some of the prizes include restaurant gift certificates, Astros tickets, golf packages, backpacks and interview portfolios.

The Fall Teacher Job Fair on Oct. 9 and the Spring Teacher Job Fair on March 12, will be held at Johnson Coliseum also.

Some of the programs offered by Career Services include presentations on resume writing, interview skills, dress for success, and business etiquette.

According to Vinessa Mundorff, employment specialist, presentations can be catered to classrooms or campus organizations.

On-campus and local area job listings are posted in the office for students, and the office contains the Dow Career Resource Library, which has up-to-date information about the job market.

Activities Continue for Students

The White Hall parking lot will be the scene of a Bearkat Block Party and Kat Kall at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

On Saturday, members of the Interfraternity Council will meet in the Bowers Stadium parking lot at 10 a.m. to go the local state park for a clean-up day. They will conclude the event with a barbecue in the stadium parking lot at 4:30 p.m.

A pre-game party, sponsored by the Department of Student Activities, will also take place in the stadium parking lot at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
