Career Expo 2002

Representatives from approximately 80 companies are seeking all majors for positions in business, law enforcement, scientific fields, construction, agriculture and government agencies.

This is the first time a career expo of this variety has been held on the SHSU campus, according to Lena Munn, career services staff assistant.

"This takes the place of the business and government fair which is usually held in the spring," she said.

The office contacted a number of companies that have recruited Sam Houston State students, and the majority said that they would prefer to come to campus in the fall instead of the spring, she said.

Students who come to the career expo should bring copies of their resumes and dress professionally.

A kick-off for the expo will be held in the Lowman Student Center Mall on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be drawings for students to win prizes, including restaurant gift certificates, Astros tickets, golf packages, backpacks and interview portfolios.

A Fall Teacher Job Fair will be held in the coliseum on Oct. 9 and a Spring Teacher Job Fair will be held March 12, 2003.

Community Invited to Discuss Higher Ed. Future

A public meeting on Monday at 1:30 p.m. in room 320 of the Lowman Student Center will give representatives of nearby schools, colleges and universities and community-based organizations, as well as parents and others concerned about education, an opportunity to discuss the campaign and related issues.

Members of the Coordinating Board staff responsible for implementing the campaign statewide also will attend the meeting.

The statewide campaign, authorized and initially funded by the Texas Legislature last year, is a key element of the state's "Closing the Gaps by 2015" higher education plan.

Identifying target populations and understanding their perceptions and knowledge about pursuing higher education is a key element of the campaign. From this, motivational and informative advertising will be created and delivered through a variety of media and a network of statewide and community partners.

Health Center to Conduct CO Monitoring

On Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., the University Health Center will conduct free carbon monoxide monitoring in the Lowman Student Center mall area.

Participants will blow into a machine, which will produce a read-out of the carbon monoxide level in the lungs.

"The CO monitoring is being conducted to promote the Health Center's free smoking cessation program available to faculty, staff and students," said Keith Lott, health center director.

"If you smoke or are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke, your body retains residual CO and will expel this gas each time you exhale," he said.

University Women's Coffee

The coffee is hosted by Nancy Gaertner, wife of SHSU President James Gaertner.

Retirees and spouses of retired faculty and staff are also invited to attend. A golf cart will be available to transport guests from the parking lot to Austin Hall.

Ruffin to Participate in Book Festival

Ruffin will attend as a guest poet and writer.

In addition to teaching English at Sam Houston State, Ruffin is director of the English Writing Option program at SHSU, founding editor and editor-in-chief of "The Texas Review," founder and director of the Texas Review Press, and faculty adviser for "Sam Houston State Review."

He has also received numerous awards and recognition for his work. Over 70 of his stories have been published in journals and magazines, and over 700 of his poems, as well as a number of essays, have appeared in publications.

More that 150 authors will participate in the Abilene book festival, and the A. C. Greene Award will be presented to a distinguished Texas author.

Attention Walkers!

Last year the Sam Houston State University Staff Heart Walk Team was recognized by the American Heart Association for collecting the most donations for the Walker County American Heart Walk.

The team collected over $3,000 of the total amount raised, which was $19,750. In addition, several individuals and groups associated with the university donated time and services for the walk and organized teams.

The American Heart Walk is a non-competitive walking event that is held every year in communities across the nation. Participants raise money to fight heart disease and stroke, and walk in the event.

Heart of A Champion Reception

The Heart of a Champion Leadership Reception is one of the events which will take place during Parents Weekend Sept. 20-22. The reception is for student leaders, their parents and student organization advisers.

The event is hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Student Services.

Blood Drive to Benefit Coffey, Olson

The drive will be conducted by the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Blood Bank and will take place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the blood bank's Mobile Coach located by the Lowman Student Center.

Donors are required to furnish a picture I.D. and a social security number.

Scholarship Donor Appreciation Luncheon

The event will be held in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The luncheon is to acquaint donors and recipients and for the university to show their appreciation to the individuals and businesses who provide scholarships for Sam Houston State University students.

Tailgate With the Bearkats

The SHSU Alumni Association and KSAM radio will present "fishspur" (formerly known as RiverWest) as the second band of the Bearkat Concert Series. Three of the four members of the band, Dave Collins, Michael DeVelve and Ryan Ogrodowicz, are SHSU students.

Student organizations and community groups will also have designated areas in the parking lot.
