SHSU Update for Week of Sept. 22

'The Brutal Truth' to Air

Maryjo Cochran, professor and coordinator of the radio-television program at Sam Houston State University is the director of the project.

The showing is the one-hour pilot of the continuing "Brutal Truth" series on the different areas of violence in society.

Hosted by actress Alexandra Marks, the documentary gives its viewers an inside look at violence in youth. Through the voices of young men and women who have fallen prey to alcohol and drugs, domestic abuse, committed gang violence or sexual abuse, they tell their stories of what it is like to be the victim, or in some cases the predator.

Experts interviewed on the program include former juvenile court judge Eric Andell; Bruce Perry of the ChildTrauma Academy; Adrian Garcia, anti-gang director for the city of Houston; Scott Poland, president of the National Association of School Psychologists; Julia Wolf, director of therapy services, Children's Assessment Center; and Larry Smith, director of Harris County Boot Camp.

Additional segments will examine domestic violence, the effect of drugs and alcohol on violence, sports and violence, school violence, workplace violence and other elements of the overall violence picture.

The SHSU radio-television students served as production assistants and did logging and post-production work.

The documentary was underwritten by The John P. McGovern Foundation and the CRC Foundation. It was directed by Studio W Productions of Houston, produced by Margaret O'Brien Molina of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, and co-produced by Health Media Network, L.L.C. and Sam Houston State University.

Korean Correctional Officials to Visit Campus

Among the guests will be the warden of Sooncheon Prison, several department directors and correctional supervisors, and a senior correctional officer from the treatment section of a women's prison in Korea.

While in Huntsville the Korean delegation will tour the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Wynne Unit, Estelle Unit, Byrd Unit and Texas Corrections Industries. They will also hear a presentation on mental health issues by Dee Kifowit, director of the Texas Council on Offenders with Mental Impairments.

The group will be honored at a reception on Oct. 8 in the George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center.

Sam Houston State University personnel who are involved with the visit include James Gaertner, president; David Payne, vice president; Dan Richard Beto, director of the Correctional Management Institute of Texas; Jurg Gerber, director of International Programs; and Wesley Johnson, associate dean of the College of Criminal Justice.

Cooper to Present Geological Research

Cooper will make the presentation at the 114th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America which will be held Oct. 27-30 in Denver. Approximately 6300 geoscientists are expected to attend.

Rush to Discuss GIS Applications

The lecture is part of the Department of Biological Sciences Seminar Series and is open to the public.

It's a 'Party on the Patio'

The social will take place in the courtyard of Academic Building 2 located at the corner of 17th Street and Sam Houston Avenue.
