Zonker Art Works on Display

A reception will be held in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Zonker, who died last spring, taught in the art department for 37 years.

The artwork is located at the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery, the SOFA Gallery, and the Lowman Student Center Gallery. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The exhibitions include work from his entire career, beginning with paintings and drawings from the early 1960s when he was an art student at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of California at Berkeley.

Collages, drawings and paintings from the 1970s and 80s, for which he was well known, are also included. His last work is a group of photorealistic still life drawings done in colored pencil.

"These are highly crafted, colorful images of light as it refracts and reflects in and around transparent glass objects such as bottles of ink and colored marbles," said Michael Henderson of the art department.

Zonker was an avid world traveler and bicyclist who spent part of his boyhood in Argentina. Some of the places he visited and lived are depicted in his works.

"The exhibitions are a rare opportunity to see the entire life's work of an excellent artist," said Henderson.

All of the works are on sale and the Zonker family will use the proceeds to create an endowed scholarship at SHSU.

University to Observe Patriot Day

The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall and will feature a welcome by SHSU President James Gaertner, the presentation of colors, a moment of silence in remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and patriotic music by the Bearkat Marching Band.

'Showtime' and 'Gala' Begin Fall Performances

A Gala Concert will be performed by SHSU music faculty on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Following the concert, a reception in Austin Hall will honor the 2002-03 Friends of Music.

Members of the Friends of Music receive information detailing upcoming recitals and concerts in the School of Music. They are honored guests at receptions following two gala recitals during the year and following other selected events through the concert season.

The theme of the Theatre and Dance Gala this year is "It's Showtime!"

Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the University Theatre Center with a silent auction.

Music for all generations will be presented in the Showcase Theatre at 6 p.m. with a repeat performance at 9:30 p.m. A live auction will be at 8 p.m. on the Mainstage.

Both events provide scholarships and funds for various activities within the programs.

SHSU Awarded Technology Grant

The university will use the grant funds to upgrade existing infrastructure and offer faculty multimedia content creation tools, according to James Van Roekel, project director.

In the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's plan entitled "Closing the Gaps," goals were established for all of the state's higher education institutions that emphasize four major themes: participation, success, excellence and research.

The grant initiative recommended strategies in which infrastructure can assist with accomplishing some of the goals established in "Closing the Gaps," according to Van Roekel.

Since its creation by the 74th Legislature in 1995, the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board has awarded approximately $1.2 billion in telecommunications grants to school districts and charter schools, two and four-year colleges and universities, public libraries and branches, public and not-for-profit healthcare facilities, innovative discovery collaboratives, and community network collaborations.

International Programs Hosts Events

Guests are invited to share information and experiences and meet other students.

The SHSU International Business Society meets every Monday at 5 p.m. in room 108 of the Smith-Hutson Business Building.

The meetings feature guest speakers from the international business world and recruiters from international companies. The organization has also planned several social events including a party at the University of Houston and a trip to a Rockets basketball game.

Outdoor Adventure Club to Organize

"Member benefits include the opportunity to plan and pursue outdoor adventures with others such as racing on mountain bikes, recreating on rocks, or relaxing on rivers," according to Marvin Seale, associate director of recreational sports.

Biological Sciences Presents Seminar

She will discuss "Cooperation and conflict in chimeras of the social amoeba, Dictyostelieum discoideum."

The seminars are held each Thursday at 4 p.m. in room 220 of the Lee Drain Building. They are open to the public.

On Sept. 19, the department will host its 2002 Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Ted Cieslak. He is from the Department of Pediatrics at Brooke Army Medical Center and will present "A Primer on Bio-terrorism."

Christian Faculty/Staff Group Announces Meetings

During the fall semester the organization will discuss the book "How Now Shall We Live" by Charles Colson and Nancy Pearcy.
