Guest Recital and Beethoven Festival
Slated for March 21-23

The festivities begin this Thursday, March 21, when the SHSU School of Music hosts a guest artist recital, the National Brass Virtuosi, during a 5 p.m. performance at the recital hall.

The National Brass Virtuosi (NBV) is a quintet comprising of members of The Cleveland Orchestra and Milwaukee and Houston symphonies, which represent the highest levels of contemporary classical brass performance.

As part of NBV's inaugural LongHorn tour, the quintet is traveling to six of Texas' finest institutes of higher learning to present music of the Renaissance and the 20th century. At each school, students will not only be able to hear great music, but they will have the opportunity to interact with NBV members.

Members of NBV include Michael Sachs on trumpet, the 1988 appointed principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra. His most notable solo appearance came during the 1996 premiere of John Williams' 'Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra.'

Mark Neihaus joins Sachs on trumpet. Neihaus in currently in his fourth season as principal trumpet of the Milwaukee Symphony. He attended the Juilliard School and makes regular appearances with the New York Big Brass, an ensemble he founded.

Michael Mayhew performs on horn. Mayhew has served as associate principal horn of the Cleveland Orchestra since 1997. He also played associate horn with the Syracuse Symphony.

Richard Stout is the NBV trombone artist but also performs on the bass trumpet and euphonium. A native of Houston, Stout was a past member of the Jacksonville Symphony and is currently on the faculty of The Cleveland Institute of Music.

Dave Kirk, on tuba, is currently in his 20th season as principal tubist of the Houston Symphony. Also a student of the Juilliard School, Kirk currently teaches at Rice University's Shephard School of Music.

Friday and Saturday, the SHSU School of Music hosts a Beethoven Festival for pianists.

On Friday, March 22, Adam Golka takes stage during a 7:30 p.m. performance in the Recital Hall. Golka, a brilliant young pianist from Houston, will play selections from Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Haydn. Admission is free.

The 14-year-old Golka, who began piano study at the age of five, has already received top honors at numerous national and international competitions. He has given recitals throughout the United States, as well as in many cities in Poland.

Golka has performed as soloist with the Houston Symphony, the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra, the Warsaw Jeunesses Musicales Orchestra, and the "Bydgoszcs Musical Impressions" Festival Youth Orchestra. His first solo album, 'The Piano Works of Composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski,' is soon set for release.

On Saturday, March 23, coordinator of piano studies Clive Swansbourne will give masterclasses on Beethoven to visiting piano students in the Recital Hall. The public is welcome.

In the afternoon, Swansbourne will join lecturer of piano Sohyoung Park in a piano duet of Beethoven's 'Great Fugue.' Swansbourne will also give a lecture recital on Beethoven's 'Appassionata' sonata.

Other Saturday evening events include a quiz show and a 7:30 p.m. concert in the Recital Hall given by both SHSU and visiting students.
