Bioterrorism Expert to Lecture

Cieslak will present "A Primer on Bioterrorism" at 4 p.m. in room 220 of the Lee Drain Building on campus. The public is invited to the free lecture. Cieslak, a colonel in the U.S. Army, received his bachelor of science in chemistry and M.D. degrees at Ohio State University before completing a residency in pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He worked as a practicing pediatrician for five years at Ft. Hood, Tex. and Landstuhl, Germany before serving a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Following a tour as the infectious diseases consultant at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Cieslak was appointed chief of field operations, then chief of the operational medicine division at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Ft. Detrick, Md. He has lectured widely on bioterrorism and biowarfare defense and regularly serves as a consultant to the Department of Defense, the CIA, FBI, various state health departments, and numerous other organizations. In August 2001, Cieslak returned to San Antonio to take over as chief of the San Antonio Military Pediatric Consortium, a program encompassing the combined pediatric departments of Brooke Army and Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Centers, as well as Darnall Hospital at Ft. Hood. His academic interests remain in the area of biodefense policy and the management of biological agent casualties. He is board-certified in pediatrics, infectious diseases, and tropical medicine. He is also a military flight surgeon.
