Parents to be Special Guests

In addition to the scheduled events, special activities will take place to give parents an idea of the opportunities available to their students. The weekend will begin on Friday (Sept. 20) in the newly renovated Lowman Student Center at 6 p.m. with the Heart of a Champion Leadership Reception in the LSC Ballroom. The Program Council ComicView with Kyle Cease will follow at 8 p.m. in the LSC Theater. On Saturday, activities will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the LSC Main Lobby where registration will take place. At 9 a.m. parents are invited to have coffee with university administrators in the LSC Atrium. The Parents' Association annual meeting is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. in the LSC Ballroom. From 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. organization and department activities will be held at various locations on campus. Distinguished Professor of History James Olsen will discuss his award winning book on John Wayne from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center. John Wayne American received the Ray and Pat Browne Award for Research and Writing from the Popular Culture Association and was nominated for the 1996 Pulitzer Prize in Biography. Special activities include a choir performance, Museum exhibition, a Generation Gap game show, a historic buildings tour, the SHSU track team cross country race, and the showing of "Not Another Teen Movie" after the Bearkat football game. Parents are invited to a Bearkat Barbecue and Kat Kall at Johnson Coliseum from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The barbecue meal is free to students on an SHSU meal plan. Students should pick up a ticket in the cafeteria, or bring an SHSU student I.D. to the coliseum. To reserve tickets for the barbecue or to purchase a barbecue/game package in advance call 1.866.BEARKAT (232.7528) and ask for the Dean of Students' Office. The direct number is 936.294.1785. On the way to the SHSU vs. Mississippi Valley State football game, parents and students are invited to drop by the Alumni Association's Tailgate Party in the Bowers Stadium parking lot, which will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. The football game will begin at 6 p.m. in Bowers Stadium. Students receive free admission to the game with a student I.D. and can pick up tickets in the Student Activities Office, LSC Room 328, by noon, Friday, Sept. 20. The weekend will conclude on Sunday with a worship service from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Farrington Pit. For more information on Parents' Weekend, visit online or call 936.294.1785.
