COBA Receives Two Donations

Chris Seaman (right), store manager of the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Huntsville location, presents a check for $1000 to COBA associate dean Leroy Ashorn.

The SHSU College of Business Administration recently received two gifts from the Wal-Mart Foundation and Marathon Oil Company.

The Wal-Mart Foundation made a contribution of $1000 to the college in recognition of its commitment to higher education.

The second donation, designated for the accounting department, was made by the Marathon Oil Company Foundation for $3000 and will be used for faculty and curriculum development.

“The department of accounting is grateful for the on-going and generous support provided by the Marathon Oil Company,” said Ross Quarles, accounting department chair.

The gift was made in recognition of that department’s tradition of service to the business community and quality of its program, according to Jennifer L. Evans, assistant business manager for the foundation.

The Marathon Oil Company Foundation was established in 2001 to respond to the local needs and interests of Marathon Oil Company employees and their neighbors. Through its foundation, the company has helped provide support for many educational, environmental, civic, and social programs throughout its area of operations.

Kelley Speaks To Colombian Cattlemen

Stanley Kelley, associate professor of animal science, was invited by the American Brahman Breeders Association and AsoCebu to give a presentation at the National Cebu Show and annual conference, held this year in Medelline, Colombia.

The title of his presentation was ‘Performance Resources and Expected Progeny Differences.’ His goal was to better educate Colombian beef cattle producers on how to use data collected by the breed associations to enhance the quality of their livestock through improved genetics.

“I was very impressed with the quality of the Colombian cattle, and the producers are really interested in making better use of technological advancements in their breeding programs,” Kelley said.

Since Colombia is a foot and mouth disease area, cattle are unable to be exported into the states. However, the elite breeders in Colombia are making use of genetic resources from throughout the world and are continually importing cattle to make improvements in their herds, according to Kelley.

While in Colombia, Kelley toured the national breeding show, local agricultural production systems and became familiar with the Colombian cattle and meat marketing programs.

“While the methods of raising cattle in Colombia for their markets are quite different from practices employed in the U.S., we share a common goal to put a desirable and consistent product in front of the consumer,” Kelley said. “That can only be accomplished through better employment of genetic information in our breeding programs.”
