New Policy Supports Employee Education
Many Sam Houston State University employees will now have the opportunity to continue
their education at a lower cost, thanks to a recently approved
policy which waives a number of fees.
The new provision applies to benefit-eligible employees participating in the retirement
system who enroll in courses at SHSU.
Although most fees will be waived, individuals are still required to pay tuition,
designated tuition, course fees and lab fees. The waiver applies to a maximum
of six credit hours per long semester or three credit hours per summer session.
The waived fees that are in effect for Fall 2003 include the student service fee
($19 per semester hour), student center fee ($60), computer use fee ($11 per semester
hour), recreation sports fee ($44), international education fee ($1), library
fee ($30), medical fee ($30) and advisement fee ($50). The $35 per credit
hour fee for SHSU classes taken at the University Center at Montgomery College
is also waived.
Sam Houston State University also provides the President's Employee Scholarship
fund, which has been increased this year to allow more employees to take advantage
of financial assistance.
While the deadline for the 2003 Fall Semester has passed, for future use employees
can access the President's Employee Scholarship
Form online under the Human Resources subheading.
"It is the administration's hope that these provisions will encourage our employees,
who wish to do so, to continue their education," said SHSU President James Gaertner.
