Professor To Teach Abroad In Spring

Professor Hugh Fullerton will soon be venturing abroad for
a semester to teach journalism and give lectures at the University
of Sarajevo in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
Fullerton, now in his sixth year with Sam Houston State University,
has instructed countless students during his 21-year career
and thanks to the Fulbright Scholar Grant, he now has the
chance to extend his career beyond international borders.
As a 2003-2004 grant recipient, Fullerton said he is excited
at the
chance to help students abroad.
“I like teaching students from another culture,”
said Fullerton, “I am very pleased to be getting it.”
According to the company’s Web site, the Fulbright Program
is the U.S. government’s flagship program in international
educational exchange and was proposed to the U.S. Congress
in 1945 by Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The Fulbright
Program receives its funding from the United States Department
of State and participating governments and host institutions
in the United States and abroad.
According to the company that manages the program, Fulbright
annually recruits and sends nearly 800 U.S. faculty and professionals
to 140 countries on its traditional program and brings 800
foreign faculty and professionals to the U.S.
Fullerton said he is looking forward to using this grant and
feels fortunate enough to be the one of the 800 recruited
faculty of the Fulbright Scholar Grants and considers receiving
this award and honor himself and for SHSU.
“The Fulbright people had an opening in Sarajevo,”
said Fullerton, “ When I talked to the vice president
he told me ‘by all means go it’s a great honor
for us.’”
During his venture, Fullerton will be instructing students
on the uses of new technologies in journalism and has desires
to do some research with a former faculty member of SHSU.
“I am hoping to do some joint research with Dr. Ardyth
Sohn, who will be on a grant in Ukraine, on the development
of mass media management in Bosnia’s media,” said
Fullerton, “We are going to try and gather comparable
data across several countries on media management for papers
and presentations.”
The Fulbright grant labels Dr. Fullerton as a visiting lecturer,
which allows his teaching obligations to be relaxed and gives
him some occasional free time. But the professor does expect
to stay busy.
“There are foreign agencies that help with the local
media and other universities that teach journalism in Bosnia,”
said Fullerton, “I’ve also been invited to do
some lecturing in Greece, so I expect to have a pretty broad
range of activities and have the opportunity to travel to
the extent of my free time.”
Never short of teaching experiences, Fullerton has taught
oversees in Bulgaria and does plan to catch up with some of
his former students he still stays in touch with.
Fullerton is scheduled to leave on Jan. 20 and doesn’t
plan on returning until mid-July, but does insist he is returning
to SHSU to teach in the fall.
Fullerton said he is excited and optimistic about his opportunity
to teach overseas, but will miss some the comforts of home.
When asked what he would miss the most, Fullerton didn’t
miss a beat and quickly said, “My wife.”
