Four
Named to Hall of Honor
Four former athletes at Sam Houston State University
have been named to the Lettermen Association Hall of
Honor for 2003. They are André Finley and Charles
Harris, football; Richard Johnson, baseball; and Donnie
Massengale, golf.
They will be honored at a luncheon during the 2003 Homecoming
activities and introduced at halftime of the football
game Nov. 8. |
Andre Finley
|
André Finley, a four-year football letterman
from 1986-89, is the Bearkat record holder in quarterback
sacks for a single season with 15 in 1988 and career
with 36, from 1986-89. His 1986 team was Gulf Star
Conference champions.
He was an Associated Press honorable mention all-America
selection and Football News 1st team pick in 1988.
He earned his bachelor of science degree in criminal
justice, works as a driver sales representative for
Con-way Southern Express, and lives in Houston. |
Charles Harris
|
Charles Harris, a four-year football letterman from
1991-94, holds or shares a number of Bearkat football
records, including longest run, rushing yards for
a season and career, rushing attempts for a single
game and career, and rushing touchdowns in a game.
His 1991 team was Southland Conference co-champions.
He earned all-conference honors in 1991, 1993, and
1994. He now lives in Caldwell and works for the City
of College Station Parks and Recreation Department.

Richard Johnson
|
Richard Johnson, a four-year baseball letterman from
1982-85, is the Bearkat career leader in home runs
and runs batted in, and ranks high in a number of
other categories including games played, season batting
average, career batting average (.365), career at
bats, career hits, season runs batted in, career doubles
and triples and season home runs.
His 1982 and 1985 teams finished first in conference.
He earned his bachelor of science degree in chemistry,
works for the Lubrizol Corp. in Deer Park, and lives
in Seabrook.

Donnie Massengale
|
Donnie Massengale was a three-year golf letterman,
from 1985-87, was a two-time all-America and three-time
all-conference selection, and won the East Texas tournament
as a Bearkat. He was also the team's most valuable
player in 1986 and 1987, and his teams were Gulf Star
champion both years.
He has five wins as a professional, having played
on the Texas Tour and Ben Hogan Tour. He is now an
owner and instructor of the Massengale/Olson Golf
Academy at the Augusta Pines course near Spring, Texas.
